External sources of funding

In addition to scholarships that Royal Holloway offers to international students there are also external organisations that offer full or partial funding in the form of scholarships, grants or loans. These are listed according to continent and country. Please read through the information on the organisation's website carefully, as it is the responsibility of the applicant to check the eligibility criteria, deadline and any other relevant information before applying for funding. Any questions regarding these sources of funding need to be directed to the awarding organisation.

Africa Educational Trust scholarships

The Africa Educational Trust is a UK registered charity that has been helping African students in the UK since 1958. Each grant and scholarship programme has specific eligibility criteria and students should only apply to those programmes for which they are eligible.

The Canon Collins Educational Trust for Southern Africa

The Trust runs scholarship programmes in the UK and South Africa.

Egypt

Citadel Capital Scholarship Foundation scholarships

The Citadel Capital Scholarship Foundation was founded in 2007 and awards scholarships to talented and promising young  Egyptians to study Masters or PhD programmes in any field of study abroad. 

Malawi

The Canon Collins Educational Trust for Southern Africa

The Trust runs scholarship programmes in the UK and South Africa.

Beit Trust scholarships

The Beit Trust offers a small number of scholarships to graduates who are domiciled in Malawi, Zambia or Zimbabwe to pursue postgraduate studies or research abroad in a field of their choice appropriate to the needs of the beneficial area. Scholarships are usually awarded for a maximum of three years at the discretion of the Trustees. 

Nigeria

Petroleum Technology Development Fund

The PTDF offers scholarships to prospective Masters and PhD students in certain streams and research areas of Geology. Please check their website for a list of the eligible courses and research areas. 

South Africa

The Canon Collins Educational Trust for Southern Africa

The Trust runs scholarship programmes in the UK and South Africa.

Commonwealth Nassau Fellowship

The Commonwealth Nassau Fellowship is a scheme for non-white South Africans to study in Britain. Preference is given to postgraduate students who have not already obtained a first degree. 

Sudan

Gordon Memorial College Trust Fund

Funding is available to students wishing to pursue postgraduate studies in the UK. Preference is given to students who are already enrolled on a programme in the UK, but applicants new to their programme of study will also be considered. Grants are only made for one year at a time, and preference will be given to those students who intend returning to the Sudan/ South Sudan after completion of their programme.

Zambia

The Trust runs scholarship programmes in the UK and South Africa.

.Beit Trust scholarships

The Beit Trust offers a small number of scholarships to graduates who are domiciled in Malawi, Zambia or Zimbabwe to pursue postgraduate studies or research abroad in a field of their choice appropriate to the needs of the beneficial area. State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic Scholarship Programme

Scholarships are available for undergraduate and Masters programmes. Please check the organisation's website for a list of the eligible fields of study. 

Bangladesh

Charles Wallace Bangladesh Trust

Awards are granted, twice a year in May and November, to doctoral students already in the UK who are normally in the final year, or anticipating the final year, of their PhDs, and who need additional funding to help them complete their studies. The maximum grant will be £1,500.

Burma

Charles Wallace Burma Trust

Bursaries are awarded in May and November to students undertaking or about to undertake a Masters or PhD programme. A maximum amount of £1,500 is awarded. Visiting fellowships are also available to at least two Burmese professionals to undertake short visits to the UK to broaden their professional knowledge, skills and contacts. 

China

Great Britain-China Educational Trust

Awards are available up to a maximum of £3,000 to Chinese students from the PRC including Hong Kong who have already started at least their third year of a PhD in any field. No applications from first or second year PhD students, undergraduates or Masters students will be accepted.

Sino-British Fellowship Scholarship Scheme

Awards are available for advanced short-term studies of a practical nature in scientific, technological, medical and educational fields. Apply to:

Sino-British Friendship Scholarship Scheme

The Scheme helps to fund postgraduate study either for PhD awards or research attachments in science, technology, medicine, humanities and social studies. The scholarship covers fees in the UK for three years plus air fares. Apply to:

Croucher Foundation Scholarships and Research Studentships

The awards are aimed at permanent residents of Hong Kong who have already started or who will be starting a full time PhD in natural science, medicine or technology and who have achieved a First Class Honours in their first degree. They are tenable for up to the third year of PhD studies.

Li Po Chun Trust Overseas Postgraduate Study Scholarship

Awards are available to Hong Kong residents who have resided in Hong Kong continuously for at least seven years and who are either holders of a degree from  a university in Hong Kong or a recognised equivalent qualification, with substantial practical working experience in the relevant field of study and who wish to pursue postgraduate studies abroad. The award is usually tenable for a maximum period of 2 years.

Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowships for Overseas Studies

The fellowships aim to finance outstanding Hong Kong students for postgraduate studies abroad. Prospective applicants have to be permanent residents of Hong Kong and have received at least seven years of continuous education in Hong Kong, including a good Honours degree from a university in Hong Kong or an equivalent qualification.

Sir Robert Black Trust Fund Scholarships

Awards are available to individuals who have resided in Hong Kong for at least five years to pursue postgraduate studies locally or abroad. Recipients are expected to return to and work in Hong Kong for at least three years upon completion of their programme. 

India

The Bestway Foundation

The Bestway Foundation provides scholarships and grants for overseas postgraduate students from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka & Bangladesh. Applications for Bestway Foundation scholarships are considered for tuition fee support only. The subjects that the Foundation considers are Sciences & Economics Only. For courses starting in September applications are considered between 1st of January to 28th February. Jubilee Scholarships

The Jubilee scholarships have been launched in 2012 as part of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee and the GREAT campaign. The award is open to young Indian graduates with an excellent academic record wishing to study a one year Masters programme in the field of Management, Manufacturing, Science and Technology at a recognised UK institution, followed by a short term internship programme in the UK.

Lady Meherbai D. Tata Education Trust Scholarships

The scholarships are available to Indian female graduates from recognised Indian universities with a consistent and good academic record to pursue postgraduate studies in social work, social science and other related fields.

Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship Programme

The Foundation awards interest-free loan scholarships to Indian nationals residing in India with a consistently good academic record to pursue postgraduate studies at institutions in India and abroad, in the fields of Pure Sciences, Applied Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities, Law, Architecture and Management.

Ravi Sankaran Fellowship Programme

The fellowships are available to graduates who are Indian nationals resident in India at the time of applying to pursue a Masters degree abroad in the field of ecology and conservation.

The J.N. Tata Endowment Scholarships

The Trust's loan-scholarships are open to Indian nationals who are graduates from a recognised university in India and who wish to pursue higher studies in any area or field of study abroad.

Inlaks Scholarships

The Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation offers scholarships for up to two years to Indian nationals who did their first degree in India to pursue studies abroad in any field excepting Computer Science, Music, Film Animation, Business Studies, Indian History, Indian Studies, Engineering, Medicine, Urban Planning, Public Health and Fashion Design. Where a PhD is pursued at a collaborating university or institution, funding can be extended for up to four years.

Charles Wallace India Trust

The Trust is an arts, heritage conservation and humanities scholarship fund enabling Indian professionals in the early or middle stages of their career to pursue study in the UK .

Credila Indian Student Loan Programme

Applications for student loans can be made through Global Managament Education Services.

Japan

Japan-IMF Scholarship Programme

Funding covering all reasonable expenses is provided by the government of Japan in the form of a two year scholarship to Japanese citizens to pursue a PhD in macroeconomics abroad. 

Kazakhstan

Bolashak Scholarships

Scholarships are available to students from Kazakhstan to pursue studies abroad. 

Malaysia

Malaysia Special Provision Scheme

Awards are jointly funded by the Malaysian and British governments and are available to study towards a full time first degree in any subject. The Malaysian government nominates the recipients. Further information is available from:

Pakistan

The Bestway Foundation

The Bestway Foundation provides scholarships and grants for overseas postgraduate students from Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka & Bangladesh. Charles Wallace Pakistan Trust

Awards are made twice a year, In June and December, to Pakistani students already in the UK who are in their final year or anticipating their final year of a PhD, and who need additional funding to help them complete their studies. The maximum grant is £1,500. The disciplines eligible for funding are: the humanities, arts, and creative industries; the social sciences, and social development; the environmental and health sciences.

Anne Marie Schimmel Scholarship

The scholarship commemorates the contribution that Prof Anne Marie Schimmel made to culture and poetry in Pakistan. It offers the opportunity to female citizens of Pakistan to pursue a one year Masters degree in the UK. Applicants have to have a declared intention to return to Pakistan and pursue a career there. Subjects not eligible are journalism, business, management, IT, media and gender/ women's studies. Preference will be given to traditional humanities or sciences.

Singapore

Tan Kah Kee Postgraduate Scholarship

The scholarships are available to citizens and permanent residents of Singapore to pursue a full time Masters or PhD degree in any discipline.

Tan Ean Kiam Scholarship

This scholarship is similar to the Tan Kah Kee postgraduate scholarship, but is specifically for Masters or PhD study in the humanities.

Public Service Commission Scholarships

The PSC scholarship provides an opportunity for outstanding young men and women to serve Singapore and Singaporeans, by offering them a fulfilling and rewarding career in the Public Service.

Scholarships portal 

South Korea

Europe-Korea Foundation Scholarship Programme

The EKF scholarship is open to South Korean students with an excellent academic record who wish to pursue graduate studies at European universities. 

Sri Lanka

The Bestway Foundation

The Bestway Foundation provides scholarships and grants for students of Pakistani, Indian, Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi origin both in the UK as well as overseas.  Applications for Bestway Foundation scholarships are considered for tuition fee support only.  Scholarship candidates who have already applied will hear from the Foundation Trustees in due course.  For more information, please contact :  Mr Zulfikaur Wajid Hasan.

Turkey

British Scholarships

British Scholarships are available to Turkish nationals with a first degree wishing to pursue postgraduate studies in areas that contribute to the social, economic and scientific development of Turkey. Applications are encouraged particularly for study in the following fields: Economics, Political Studies, Social Sciences with direct application to social problems, Applied Sciences, Engineering, Business Administration and Management, Computer Technology, Information Services, and Agricultural Science. Funding is available for courses ranging from three months to three years, with provision for up to three months of English language training in the UK prior to taking a place on a course. Requests for application forms should be sent to: The Assistant Representative, Office of the Counsellor for Cultural and British Council Affairs, Kirlangic Sok 9, Gaziosmanpasa, Ankara, Turkey. There are also opportunities for research assistantships (details from the Turkish Higher Education Ministry).

North America 

Canada

BUTEX scholarships

A number of scholarships to the value of £500 are available to undergraduate students registered at institutions in Canada or the US who wish to study abroad for at least one semester at a BUTEX-affiliated institution in the UK.

The Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund

The Fund provides scholarships ranging from £500 to £3,000 to Canadian citizens who are registered for full time postgraduate studies at an institution in the UK and who have already completed at least one term of study. Students on a one year programme are not eligible.

Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarships

The Foundation offers scholarships to Canadian citizens who are applying to a doctoral programme in the social sciences or humanities or who are already in their first or second year of such a full time programme at a foreign institution.

SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada provides fellowships to citizens or permanent residents of Canada to pursue their first PhD in the social sciences or humanities abroad, provided they have completed at least one previous degree at an institution in Canada.

The Canadian Federation of University Women

Various awards and fellowships are offered to female Canadians to pursue studies abroad.

 

Private Student Loans

These loans may serve as top up loans to the Canadian government loans. Applications are made through Global Education Management Services (GEMS).

USA

Fulbright Awards

The Commission offers awards to students to pursue a postgraduate degree in the UK in any subject.

Marshall Scholarships

Scholarships are offered to young Americans of high ability to study for a postgraduate degree in the UK.

NAFA

The National Association of Fellowship Advisors lists various awards and scholarships available to American students.

BUTEX Scholarships

A number of scholarships to the value of £500 are available to undergraduate students registered at institutions in Canada or the US who wish to study abroad for at least one semester at a BUTEX-affiliated institution in the UK.

Federal loans

Citizens and eligible non-citizens of the US may be eligible to borrow federal loans to help fund their studies, provided they meet all the eligibility criteria.

Veterans benefits

Veterans of the US military and their dependants may be eligible for educational benefits to help fund their studies. 

Central America

Bermuda and the Cayman Islands

The governments of Britian and of Bermuda and the Cayman Islands offer a jointly funded scheme for students from Bermuda and the Cayman Islands wishing to pursue full-time higher education in the UK. Information may be obtained from the governments of Bermuda and the Cayman Islands. 

Mexico

CONACyT

Funding is available to Mexican students wishing to pursue postgraduate studies (Masters or PhD) in Mexico or abroad.

Becas Mob Foundation

The Foundation offers scholarships to Mexicans wishing to pursue a Masters degree in any field of study at a foreign insitution, provided that their studies provide a future contribution to the advancement and modernisation of Mexico.

FIDERH loan scheme

The Fund for Development of Human Resources is a federal trust that offers student loans to Mexican citizens for postgraduate certificate, Masters or doctoral studies in the areas of health, natural and exact sciences, social sciences and business, humanities, engineering and technology, and agriculture. Repayment starts one year after graduating. 

Australasia

Australia

Australian Music Foundation in London

Grants are available to current Australian residents who are applying for a programme of further artisictic study in the UK, USA or Europe, and to Australian citizens who are currently residing abroad who are about to commence, or already undertaking a programme of further study as performers or composers in the UK, USA or Europe.

The General Sir Monash Foundation awards

The General Sir Monash Foundation offers scholarships to Australian citizens graduating from Australian universities to pursue postgraduate studies abroad. The scholarships are for an amount of AUD $50,000 per year and are awarded for a maximum of three years.

New Zealand

OMV New Zealand Ltd scholarship

Funding is available to New Zealand citizens or permanent residents for one year of postgraduate studies in the fields of earth sciences, environmental sciences and engineering. The maximum amount awarded is NZ $10,000.

Denmark

Anglo-Danish Society Scholarships

Scholarships are available to Danish nationals who completed their first degree at a Danish university and who wish to pursue postgraduate studies in the UK.

Ireland

The O'Reilly Foundation

The Foundation awards scholarships to Irish nationals wishing to pursue doctoral studies at a university of their choice. Preference is given to those wishing to study in the fields of Business Studies, Law, Marketing, Media Studies, Science, Technology or Arts.

Norway

Norwegian Student Loans

Student loans are available to Norwegians wishing to pursue full time undergraduate or postgraduate studies at an institution of Higher Education in the UK.

Ukraine

The Victor Pinchuk Foundation

Grants are awarded to Ukrainians wishing to pursue a Masters degree in the fields of environment and ecology, agricultural studies, law and public administration.

Middle East

Jordan, Palestine, Syria & Lebanon

Said Foundation 2016/17 Scholarships (1-year postgraduate courses)

The aim of the Said Foundation Scholarship Programme is to offer an opportunity to young people aged up to 35 years from Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria who wish to study or train in the UK.  Scholarships are tenable for up to one year.

 

Lebanon

British Lebanese Association Scholarship Fund

The BLA Fund awards two to three full or partial scholarships to eligible students wishing to pursue a Masters programme in the UK.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi British Bank MBA Scholarship Scheme

Funding is available for Saudi nationals to obtain an MBA degree from a recognised institution in the UK.

Various nationalities

AAUW International Fellowship

 A number of scholarships are available to women who are not US citizens or permanent residents to pursue postgraduate studies abroad.

Aga Khan Foundation Scholarships

The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships annually to outstanding students from developing countries for postgraduate studies who have no other means of financing their studies. Scholarships are in the form of a 50% grant : 50% loan and are awarded once a year in June or July. The Foundation gives priority to Masters programmes, but is also willing to consider applications for PhD programmes, when doctoral degrees are necessary for the career objectives of the student.

Altajir Trust Scholarships

Scholarships are available to Arab nationals resident in Arab countries and who do not hold British residency to study at postgraduate level, with a possibility of funding at undergraduate level.

Anglo-Jewish Association Scholarships

The AJA provides financial support to Jewish students in the UK.

British Chevening Scholarships

Chevening scholarships are awarded for postgraduate studies (mainly one year Masters programmes) and are available to citizens of countries other than the UK or other European Union countries, or the USA.

British Council

Offering a whole range of exciting and pioneering study abroad options to offer, worldwide and in the UK. Programs offer a wide range of opportunities, short term and long term, for all fields. Take a look around and see which ones best fit your needs. 

British Federation of Women Graduates Scholarships

The BFWG gives awards to female students in the third year of their doctoral studies who commenced their PhD programme during the period specified on the BFWG's website.

BrokeScholar

 

Developed Commonwealth Scholarships

Scholarships are available to citizens of the developed Commonwealth (Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Malta, Cyprus, Singapore, The Bahamas, Brunei Darussalam) for Masters and doctoral programmes. If you are a citizen of the Falkland Islands, the Maldives, St Helena or the Seychelles, you can apply for scholarships for undergraduate studies in the UK.

Funds for Women Graduates

The FFWG offers foundation grants and emergency grants to women studying at doctoral level to help with living expenses only.

Google Europe Scholarships for students with disabilities

Scholarships are awarded to students with disabilities who are studying Computer Science or a closely related technical field at undergraduate, Masters or doctoral level.

 Il Circolo Scholarships

Scholarships are available to students pursuing innovative research projects relating to Italian academic or cultural interests (Art, Humanities, Music and Sciences).

Joint Japan/ World Bank Graduate Scholarship Programme

Scholarships are awarded to students from World Bank member countries to undertake graduate studies in subjects related to economic development at renowned universities in World Bank member countries.

Mackenzie King Scholarships

The Open Scholarship is open to graduates of Canadian universities who are commencing or continuing postgraduate studies in any discipline in Canada or elsewhere. The Travelling Scholarship is open to graduates of Canadian universities who are commencing or continuing postgraduate studies in the area of international relations or industrial relations in the UK or the US.

Marjorie Deane Financial Journalism Foundation Studentships

Studentships are available to students wishing to pursue a Masters degree in some aspect of finance or economics at a British university.

Sir Richard Stapley Educational Trust

 

Grants are available to students from Great Britain and abroad pursuing postgraduate studies in any discipline in the UK and who experience financial difficulties that may prevent them from completing their studies. Grant amounts range from £300 to £1,000.

UNESCO Fellowships

Fellowships are available to students wishing to pursue postgraduate studies of short-term duration.
