LaTeX - Windows installation guide

LaTeX can be installed on Microsoft Windows using the following steps:

  1. Install the latest version of MiKTeX.
  2. Install an editor such as TeXnic Center or proTeXt
This guide is favoured towards TeXnic Center as we have this installed on the computers in the Physics department, but feel free to use proTeXt or another editor if you prefer.

TeXnic Center Installation Walkthrough

Installation is different for different versions of windows. Please refer to the guide which applies to your operating system

Windows XP Installation

If you are running Windows XP service pack 2/3 please download the stable version found here. Once the installer has downloaded, run it and wait for it to finish. Open up TeXnic Center for the first time and a dialog box should appear asking for a pathway to a TeX distribution. For this we will use MiKTeX that we installed in step 1. Locate the install directory for MiKTeX and find the folder containing the required executable files. The usual pathway for this is: C:\Program Files\MiKTeX\miktex\bin:

MiKTeXpathway

Now the program will ask you for the pathway for a postscript reader. As before, navigate to the desired location using the browse button, only this time you are looking for an executable file. (note this step requires you to actually have a reader such as Adobe installed)

Windows Vista/ Windows 7 Installation

If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7 please download the Alpha version found here. This version will automatically detect your MiKTeX installation so the only configuration step required is to tell the program where your Postscript reader is. Simply find your .exe file associated with your reader (Adobe reader for example).

You should now be set up and ready to go! Refer to the tutorials in the menu on the right to get started with writing your first document.
