As a College we are committed to promoting equality and diversity to ensure that every member of our community can be themselves and reach their full potential. It is not just the responsibility of LGBT+ people to work towards establishing an inclusive working culture - LGBT+ allies are also a crucial part of this commitment.
LGBT+ allies are not experts in issues relating to LGBT+ people and communities, but are individuals wanting to become more confident in talking about issues that affect LGBT+ people and in dispelling myths and biases. Allies are people who believe that all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, are to be treated with dignity and respect.
We have a number of initiatives to engage non-LGBT+ people with LGBT+ equality. These include:
A new suite of Royal Holloway Equality and Diversity Guides including; How to be an LGBT+ Ally, and How to be a Trans Ally guides. We have also designed an Introduction to Trans Awareness e-module. In the new academic year, we will also be launching new LGBT+ Awareness and Ally training workshops to help us strengthen our support for LGBT+ equality as well establishing ‘safe spaces’ across the College.
If you would like to learn more about how to become an active LGBT+ ally please email the LGBT+ Staff Network who welcome allies to their meetings. You can also email our Equality and Diversity team if you would like to discover more about how we support LGBT+ students and colleagues, including how we ensure our policies are LGBT+ inclusive to all employees.
