We have been made aware of an increasing number of external users in the Library, particularly A-level students from local schools and sixth-form colleges. We would like to reassure colleagues that the Library team are proactively tackling the issue.

Since the issue was first raised, the Library team, in consultation with the Students’ Union has tried to resolve this issue in a number of ways: Students have been encouraged to report any disruption to staff, local schools/colleges have been asked to discourage their students from using our facilities, signage has been placed across the library, and the Library staff team are approaching individuals who are suspected to be A-level students and asking them to leave.

It remains a priority that we provide a productive study space for our students and to achieve this, and learn from this year’s experience, the following actions are planned:

•              Activate the access control gates at the Library entrance

•              Review guidelines on usage entitlements of the Library

•              Liaise closely with Students’ Union VP Education and students to consider these issues as well as means of addressing challenges of litter, cleaning etc in a very busy 24/7 environment.

Thank you to all the Library colleagues who are working hard to ensure that study spaces are available for our students.
