Jan 14 2020

Our survey season begins on Thursday 16 January with the launch of the National Student Survey (NSS) and our undergraduate survey. The NSS is open to all final year undergraduates and is critical to our external reputation and future student recruitment.

1. What surveys are running and when?

Our NSS and undergraduate survey will run from Thursday 16 January to Thursday 30 April 2020. There will also be surveys for our postgraduate taught and postgraduate research students that will take place later on this term, but dates for these are still to be announced.

2. What support is available to colleagues?

There is a range of guidance available for colleagues on the intranet, including; ideas for engaging with students, NSS and undergraduate powerpoint slides for use in lectures and seminars, information on inappropriate guidance and FAQs. Find out more here

3. How can I support survey season?

Each department has a named 'survey champion' to help promote the survey within your area. Survey champions have access to:

  • Additional promotional materials
  • Additional support from Internal Comms (including tablets, survey incentives and more)

If you're not sure who your departmental survey champion is, please contact the Internal Communications team and they will put you in touch with yours.

4. Why is it important?

The National Student Survey (NSS) is critical to our external reputation and future student recruitment. Potential students can check our NSS scores by course when applying (on Unistats, for example) and many university league tables use the survey to rank universities (note we cannot link the NSS to league tables when promoting it to students. Please see guidance on inappropriate influence).

Our undergraduate survey gives us the opportunity to address issues with students' experiences before they take the NSS.

Our postgraduate surveys give us important feedback about the experiences of postgraduates, and helps us compare our performance against other universities.

5. What central activities are taking place to encourage students to fill out their survey?

Central survey activity will be taking place in the Davison Building from Friday 17 January - Friday 31 January, where bean bags, iPads and a pick'n'mix stand will be available for students to complete their survey. All students who complete the survey before Friday 31 January will have the opportunity to enter themselves into our Prize Draw for the chance to win one of six prizes - two x restaurant vouchers, two x Virgin Experience vouchers, a Eurostar voucher, and a Booking.com voucher.
