Today we are announcing two important leadership appointments in the School of Humanities and Department of English.

School of Humanities

After helping to create and subsequently lead the new School of Humanities, Professor Juliet John is moving to a new position at City, University of London, in the summer. Following a recruitment process led by Katie Normington, Deputy Principal, Professor Giuliana Pieri, Professor in Modern Languages, has been appointed as the new Head of the School of Humanities for a one-year period. At a critical time in the development of the School and with the wider impact of coronavirus (Covid-19), Giuliana will be working closely with Juliet and members of the Executive Board to ensure a smooth transition and to work with the School to be ready for challenges faced by university in the year ahead.

Professor James Knowles, who works closely with the Head of the School of Humanities, said “'I am delighted that Professor Pieri has agreed to take on the role. She brings a distinguished research track-record, as the PI for a number of AHRC grants and as a member of the REF panel for Modern Languages. Guiliana also has earned a national reputation for innovation in teaching, in encouraging student-focused developments, and in fostering outreach work with schools during her tenure as the previous head of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. I am delighted that we have been able to appoint such an experienced and highly-qualified individual from a very strong field of applicants. The quality of the field reflects well on the research and education strengths of the School. I wish her, and the school, every success in the challenging year ahead.”

Department of English

After leading the department successfully through this unprecedented period as Head of the Department of English, Vicky Greenaway will be stepping down to take up the key role of Director of Education for the Humanities this summer. Professor Juliet John has led the appointment process to appoint her successor and Professor Ruth Livesey, Professor in 19th Century Literature and Thought, has been appointed as the new Head of the Department of English from this summer.  Juliet says “I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Ruth Livesey as Head of English. A scholar of international reputation and long-serving member of the Department, Ruth has a range of leadership experience as Associate Dean of the Graduate School, former Director of Research, as well as PGT, for English, and recently, as an AHRC Leadership Fellow. The strong field was a credit to the English department, which has been fostered with care and exceptional commitment by Dr Greenaway. I thank her for her exceptional leadership and wish Ruth well in leading a department with a strong record in both research and teaching.”
