Following an initiative from IT Services and the School of Engineering, Physical and Mathematical Sciences, we are pleased to announce the launch of a new recording studio in the Bourne Building.

If you are looking to produce high quality content for your teaching and learning materials, our new studio equipment will help bring any topic or presentation to life.

The key features of the studio are:

  • A lightboard – a glass screen which can be written on it like a whiteboard. It appears that you’re writing in the air when recorded

  • A greenscreen studio – this can be used film your lectures with a background of your choice.

Both the lightboard and greenscreen are useful tools for illustrating a variety of topics in an engaging way, whilst talking to camera.

For an example of what can be created, have a look at this short demonstrative video by Dr Alastair Kay

How is my content captured?

Presentations and lectures can be pre-recorded and shared via Panopto, or made available on OneDrive (information on how to do this will be presented at our training sessions, detailed below). This means that they can be shared with your students in advance, leaving more time for discussion during live sessions. For some lectures and events, livestream may be the best option – this is also possible in the studio.

Accessing the new space

To begin with, the recording studio will be bookable through the Audio Visual team. Over time we will open up the studio for bookings via Resource Booker.

Before being given access, you will need to attend a training session to help you get familiar with the equipment. It is relatively easy to use and once you’re familiar, you’ll only need to hit the ‘record’ button to get started.

Training sessions will take place regularly at 10-11am every Tuesday. Please contact the AV team to book your session. It is worth booking your training in good time, as places will be limited to three or four colleagues per session.
