As the holidays approach, I’d like to wish you all a very enjoyable and relaxing festive break.
2018 has been an eventful year: The Office for Students came into existence and the Government launched a review of post-18 education that may well have significant implications for us in the years to come. Brexit continues to occupy our minds, but it was pleasing that our EU colleagues were offered the opportunity to participate in a pilot scheme to apply for settled status and be granted indefinite leave to remain. The USS pension evaluation and subsequent strike action was a bruising time and while we expect contributions to increase in the new year I believe that, through the Joint Expert Panel, we are making good progress towards a resolution.
This year has also been a memorable one for our Royal Holloway campus and community. We have embarked on a three-year change programme that will strengthen our position for the future. REF 2021 is ever closer and our preparations are well advanced.
We have also taken the bold decision to dissolve the Faculties and create a School structure. We are announcing the new Heads of School in today’s newsletter and I would like to offer them my congratulations on their appointment.
Many of our colleagues will be working on campus over the holidays, including our Security, Customer Service and Catering teams. If you are a member of a team working over the period, I’d like to say a very big thank you on behalf of the whole College for the role you will play in helping the students who will remain on campus to enjoy the festive season and feel supported.
Season’s Greetings to everyone, and I look forward to seeing you in 2019.
