As part of our ongoing work towards compliance with GDPR, the Project team is running a data amnesty. We need to know what data we have and where it is, and this work is partly being undertaken by our Data Stewards and Data Custodians. However in an institution of this size and age it is guaranteed that we will be storing data in ways that we shouldn’t and in ways that can be improved. We want to help you to look after your data properly, use it appropriately and get the greatest benefit from it.
We want to know about internal departmental databases, spreadsheets of student records going back decades, contact lists of alumni, staff files, boxes of applications tucked away in the back of the cupboard and so on.
We don’t want to take all this data away from you, although in some cases it may be that it no longer serves a purpose and we can help you destroy it safely. At this point we simply want to know what’s out there and we need everybody’s help in order to do so.
So please, check your shared drives, the filing cabinets, that box at the back of the cupboard which you’ve never really opened and if there is something in there you think we ought to know about, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
