VPN Guide

What is the VPN?

The Royal Holloway VPN (Virtual Private Network) provides you with a digital connection to campus, even if you’re not here. It works by routing your network traffic through the campus, giving you a Royal Holloway network address. When you’re using the VPN your computer will behave exactly like it would if you were on campus, and this allows you quick access to restricted services, like the intranet, library services, and your Y: drive.

At Royal Holloway you can access the VPN using a client called GlobalProtect, which is available for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android devices.

Are you a student? Follow this guide on the student intranet.

How do I download and use the VPN?

The staff portal is staff-vpn.royalholloway.ac.uk. You will need to enter your email address and password to sign in.

When accessing the VPN, you will now also need to sign in using multi-factor authentication (MFA).

GlobalProtect is available on the App Store for Apple and on the Google Play Store

I’m on a Royal Holloway managed laptop

GlobalProtect comes pre-installed on managed devices. You should not need to install it.

If you cannot find GlobalProtect on your machine, follow the steps in the ‘I’m on a Mac or PC’. If you are unable to install GlobalProtect, please contact the IT Service Desk.

I’m on a Mac or PC

  1. Open your web browser and visit https://staff-vpn.royalholloway.ac.uk. Please note that you must use 'royalholloway' and not 'rhul'
  2. Log in using your university username and password
  3. Download and open the installer for your operating system
  4. You will be guided through the process to install GlobalProtect. Leave all of the options as the default and complete the process with the installer wizard
  5. Once GlobalProtect has been installed open the app
  6. The app will ask you for a Portal address. Enter staff-vpn.royalholloway.ac.uk in the box and press Connect
  7. You will be prompted to log in. Enter your university email address and password, and press Sign In. You will be prompted to use multi-factor authentication (MFA). If you need additional help with MFA, help guides are available here.

Please note, if you are on Mac you will need to grant the app permissions in your System Preferences. You should be prompted to do this automatically. You can also do this manually by opening System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. There will be a prompt from Palo Alto Networks which you will need to ‘Allow’.
