Our internal selection processes

Some funders and schemes limit the number of application an organisation is allowed to submit for a call. In such cases, the university will have an internal selection process to select the applications to be submitted.

NERC Standard Grant

NERC introduced demand management measure for Standard (including New Investigator) Grants in 2015.

Research organisations which have a lower than 20% success rates are limited in the number of applications they can submit. The success rate is calculated on the basis of application and award data from the previous three years.

Royal Holloway is restricted to ONE application now until January 2020.

NERC deadlines are usually in January and July with corresponding internal deadlines in October and April.

Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships

The Leverhulme Early Career fellowship scheme provide career development opportunities for those at a relatively early stage of their career but who have a proven record of research. The fellows are expected to undertake a significant piece of publishable research during the fellowship.

As the scheme offers 50% match funding for the salary costs of the fellow, there is an internal selection process in place to select the applications supported. Initial screening is done by departments and a panel selects the applications to be submitted.

Leverhulme deadlines are annual and usually in February with a corresponding internal deadline in December or January.

Leverhulme Research Leadership

For talented scholars who have launched a university career but who need to build a team to address a distinct research problem.

Each institution is limited to ONE application only

Leverhulme deadlines are triennial and not necessarily at a fixed time of year.

For UK universities to fund 15 Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarships in a priority research area for that institution

Each institution is limited to ONE application only

Leverhulme Research Centres

For UK universities to set up a Leverhulme Research Centre for outstanding original research aspiring to achieve a step-change in scholarship

Each institution is limited to ONE application only

Philip Leverhulme Prizes

For researchers at an early stage of their careers whose work has had international impact and whose future research career is exceptionally promising - to use for any research purpose.  Subject areas rotate on a 3 year cycle.

Each institution is limited to three nominations per subject area

Leverhulme deadlines are annual and usually in May.

Any competition is normally managed by the relevant department

UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships

This scheme supports early career researchers and innovators with outstanding potential in universities, UK registered businesses, and other research and user environments including research councils' institutes and laboratories. Applicants are expected to be exceptional researchers.

UKRI expects host institutions to have effective and transparent arrangements in place for selecting the applicants supported for this highly competitive scheme. They have been very clear in requesting support from universities to reduce the number of applications and only put forward few but high quality ones.

There are 6 deadlines - two deadlines a year until the end of 2020 (expected in October and May).

Next internal deadline will be August 15th.

ESRC Centres

The ESRC centres competition is the flagship funding for ESRC centres. Where budget allocations allow the ESRC aims to run periodic centres competitions, typically every two years, to fund a limited number of centre proposals ranging from £2.5-10 million (100% full economic cost) for a term of up to five years.

ESRC Large Grants

ESRC Large Grant proposals take forward ambitious research projects with the potential to generate significant economic or societal impact.  Applications are usually limited.

Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowships

The RAEng Research Fellowships are designed to promote research excellence in engineering. They provide support for early career post-doctoral researchers and encourage them to become future research leaders in engineering.

Between 3 and 5 applications are allowed per institution

There are annual deadlines – usually in September.  Applications for 2019/20 round will be open in early July 2019.  Please contact researchservices@rhul.ac.uk if you are interested in applying.

British Academy Global Professorships

This programme aims to demonstrate and further enhance the UK’s commitment to international research partnerships and collaboration as well as strengthen the UK’s research capacity and capability in the humanities and the social sciences.

There are deadlines twice a year usually in the Spring and Autumn
