FutureLearn, the social learning platform, is partly by the Open University, and benefits from their 50 years of experience in online education and distance learning. FutureLearn partners with a quarter of the world's top universities, and offers an ever-expanding catalogue of free online courses on a wide range of subjects to over fifteen million registered learners in over 190 countries worldwide.
FutureLearn's approach to learning is guided by ten principles, including:
- Openness - making content discoverable and accessible to learners whoever they are, wherever they may be, and regardless of the device they use to connect to the web
- Telling stories - The learmer's journey is inspired by a narrative that includes times to watch, listen and read, space for conversation, moments of quiet reflection, and climaxes of assessment.
- Provoking conversation - whether between learners or between learners and educators, conversation is integral to the learning experience and is encouraged and supported in context throughout courses. Even the 'cannot be found page' does this!
- Creating connections - encouraging learners to make connections to provide mutual support, challenge their ideas and overcome the issues inherent in remote study
