College REF OA fund

The College has set up an Open Access fund to support the REF. The purpose of the fund is to support authors who are at risk of not having at least one 3 or 4* star output and who need funds to publish in a full OA journal. The fund can not be used to pay to publish OA in subscription journals which also offer a REF OA compliant option via deposit into Pure.

The criteria to use the fund are:

  1. The output must be a candidate for submission to the REF.
  2. The author is considered at risk of not having at least one 3 or 4* output and who needs funds in order to publish the output.
  3. The article must be going to be published in a full Open Access journal. If the publisher offers a REF OA compliant route via deposit of the author's accepted manuscript into Pure and this file being made OA, then the fund can not be used. The OA route via deposit into Pure must be used.
  4. The publisher should publish the article using the Creative Commons CC-BY licence as the preferred licence.
  5. Authors should have no funds within the research grant to pay OA charges
  6. The PI account should not contain more than £10k, if so, then the PI account should be used to pay for the OA.
  7. Authors must have the permission of their DoR or UoA lead to apply to use the fund.

To apply to the fund:

  1. Please add the details of the article to Pure
  2. Please ask your DoR or UoA lead to send a supporting email to openaccess@rhul.ac.uk. The email should contain the details of the article as well as a statement that the article meets the criteria provided above.
  3. Please complete the application form at: https://rhul.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/college-ref-oa-fund

The email and application form will be checked and advice will be provided back to the author.

If there are questions relating to the fund, please email openaccess@rhul.ac.uk
