Coping with change
This workshop is designed for those creating or managing change, as well as those experiencing change.
To help delegates consider what their own personal reaction to change is and how to introduce coping mechanisms so that they are better able to manage themselves through periods of transition.
Delegates will be able to:
- Understand change at a psychological level – why we react the way we do to change.
- Personal review of our personal reaction to change – what are the ‘trigger points’ and what helps.
- Coping mechanisms and development of personal plans for handling change.
- Understand the Fischer Change Curve model as an example of the change process.
- Understand the impact of the changes in Higher Education on the culture and environment at Royal Holloway.
Change is a constant occurrence yet it can cause much discomfort. This workshop will help delegates understand their own reactions to change, notice the change around them and develop ways to adapt to it.
The workshop will give individuals the opportunity to explore change and the impact it has on them personally. There will be space for personal reflection about why people react to change in so many different ways including a range of emotions such as fear, excitement, not being in control and anxiety around lack of skills or knowledge for a new situation as it occurs.
Understanding this will provide the foundation for creating awareness of change occurring and strategies for each individual in how they may approach change in the future. This will begin at the point of noticing change, accepting it and considering how to approach and manage the process – essentially regaining control at an individual level.
