Spring Fest Photography competition


 

Throughout Spring Fest, we’re celebrating the beauty and diversity of the Royal Holloway campus through a community photography competition. Whether you’re an experienced photographer or simply love capturing moments on your phone, we’d love to see your perspective!

Submission deadline: Sunday 31 May 2026 at 11.59pm

Entry criteria

  • Open to all Royal Holloway staff and students.
  • All photographs must be taken on the Royal Holloway campuses in Egham and London (any location, building, or outdoor space).
  • Each participant may submit to one or multiple categories.
  • Photos may be taken at any time before the deadline. Past or present images are welcome as long as they were taken on our Living Campus.
  • Only minor, natural adjustments to photographs are allowed. Permitted edits can include cleaning sensor spots, basic cropping, colour correction, noise reduction, and sharpening. We will not accept AI-generated content, heavy manipulation, or cloning out distractions.

     

Categories - please note that each category will have a camera and phone winner

Wildlife and habitats: 

  • Animals, plants, fungi etc. found on campus.
  • Natural or semi‑natural environments on campus, such as woodlands, ponds, meadows, or landscaped areas.

Nature and People

  • Photos that show people interacting with or experiencing the natural environment on campus

When submitting your photograph, please include the following information:

  • Your name and status (staff or student).
  • The category you’re entering.
  • A title for your photograph.
  • A brief description (optional).

Please ensure that your photograph is: 

  • High enough resolution for display.
  • In JPEG or PNG format.
  • Your own original work.

Rules

  • Photos must be taken on our Egham of London campus and must be your own work.
  • You may submit to multiple categories, but each photo can only be entered into one category.
  • If your photo includes identifiable people, you must have their permission to submit it.
  • By entering, you grant Royal Holloway permission to display your images in exhibitions, online galleries, or promotional materials (credited to you).

Entries will be judged on:

  • Creativity.
  • Technical quality.
  • Interpretation of the category.
  • Overall visual impact.

Our esteemed judges, Mark Fellowes (PVC Academic Strategy, Planning and Resource) and Matthew Peterson (SU VP Education and President designate), review all submissions after the deadline. Winners will be announced at the beginning of June.

Prizes and display

  • £100 John Lewis voucher for the winner in each category, with the winnig photos to be displayed in EWD atrium. 
  • £50 vouchers for the runner-up in each category

Tips for Entrants

  • Explore campus at different times of day for varied lighting.
  • Think about composition; leading lines, symmetry, and framing can elevate a simple shot.
  • Don’t overlook small details; sometimes the best images come from unexpected angles.
  • For phone photographers: clean your lens and tap to focus for sharper results.
