Service updates


The Library is putting in place measures to make sure that we are able to continue to offer as many of our services as possible online. 


Access to the library:

  • Following an announcement by the UK Government regarding libraries, the library, archives and exhibition space are now closed. This also includes Founder's Reading Room.

  • Please hold onto any books you have out on loan. Do not return them to the library. All books should have a return date of 1st May 2020. If they do not you can renew them online and this will extend the return date until 1st May 2020. We will review this closer to the time.

  • If you have books on loan but are graduating this year, so may not return to campus again, we will provide details on how you can return these books in the future.


Accessing our online collection:

  • Students and staff can use LibrarySearch to search our extensive online collection. We provide access to over 550,000 eBooks, millions of online journal articles, online newspapers, statistics, video streaming platforms and more.

  • You can access specially selected databases in your subject area on our Databases A-Z page.

  • We are also working through the Reading Lists to make sure that as many essential items as possible are available electronically. If you need to access an item listed as essential reading or to support your research, assignment or examination preparation, please contact and let us know the book title and, if applicable, the module code and we will try to make it available.

  • Where digital copies of books are not available we are liaising with module conveners to acquire suitable alternatives.

  • All Royal Holloway staff and students can sign up online to Senate House Library to gain access to their digital resources.

  • You can access past exam papers online. If you are having issues accessing them then please read our subject guide on Accessing Past Exam Papers.

  • Freely Available Resources. A number of publishers have made content freely available on a temporary basis. Please note these will not be available long term.


Other Service Information:

  • All recalls on books will be cancelled. If you have a book which has been recalled, please ignore this. We are cancelling the recalls and then extending the loan period for you. If you acrue any fines while we go through this process please contact

  • Until further notice we will no longer be able to provide physical Inter Library Loans. We will endeavour to provide all digital article and chapter requests where possible.

  • All existing Inter Library Loans currently loaned out will have their due date extended until the 30th of April 2020 in the first instance.

  • Bedford Square is closed and so is unable to accept any book returns.


Available Support:

  • We are running webinars going through how to access our resources online so you can continue studying without access to the physical library. For details on upcoming webinars visit our Moodle space. All webinars will be recorded and the recordings are available on our Moodle space.

  • Our Academic Liaison team is providing 1-2-1 appointments via Skype to help you with searching our resources, evaluating information and referencing.


External Users:

  • For existing external users who have items on loan, these loans will be extended until Library re-opens.
