Questions about my BRP

How to resolve common problems with your visa

What is a BRP?

A BRP (biometric residence permit) is the blue and pink card that you are given if you are studying at Royal Holloway on a programme longer than 6 months. A BRP is either collected after your arrival to the UK, or it is granted to you after an application for leave made in the UK. It should contain personal details and the conditions of your leave in the UK. It is important that you check your BRP appropriately as whatever conditions it shows are the conditions you must abide by.

I've lost my BRP overseas/I've had my BRP stolen overseas

If you have lost your BRP, or had it stolen outside of the UK, you must report the loss to the Home Office. After you have reported the loss, you must apply for a temporary replacment BRP online which will allow you to re-enter the UK.

Once you have applied for this, you will receive a new stamp/vignette in your passport which will be valid for 30 days. You must return to the UK during this period of time.

After you have returned to the UK, you MUST visit the International Student Support Office so that we can help you to apply for a new BRP card. If you do not apply to replace the card you can be fined or have your visa cancelled by the Home Office so it is important you apply for the new BRP card within 3 months of reporting its loss.

Once your new BRP has arrived, please visit the Student Services Centre or the International Advice team to make sure the College has recorded the new BRP details.

I've lost my BRP in the UK/I've had my BRP stolen in the UK

If you have lost your BRP, or had it stolen in the UK, you must report the loss to the Home Office. After reporting this, you must apply for a replacement BRP within 3 months. If applicable, you may also need to report the loss/theft to the Police.

It will cost £38.20 for the standard service which will normally take 6-8 weeks.

If you have less than 3 months leave remaining on your visa, you may not need to apply for a replacement BRP. Please speak with the International Advice team for further advice and guidance on your specific circumstances.

Once your new BRP has arrived, please visit the Student Services Centre or the International Advice team to make sure the College has recorded the new BRP details.

Some of my personal details are incorrect on my BRP

It is very important that you check your BRP card carefully. If you notice a mistake regarding your personal details (name, date of birth, nationality, place of birth) please come and speak with an adviser. You will need to report this problem with your BRP to the Home Office who will check their records against the BRP.

The Home Office will confirm via email if an error has been made, and will mail you a new BRP card. We ask that you speak with us to arrange this with you, as we can act as your delivery address as all BRP deliveries must be signed for.

Once your new BRP has arrived, please visit the Student Services Centre or the International Advice team to make sure the College has recorded the new BRP details.

Some of the conditions of my leave are wrong on my BRP

If you believe there to be a mistake with some of the conditions of your Tier 4/Student leave on your BRP (length of leave, working conditions, restrictions) then please contact an adviser. Conditions of leave under Tier 4/Student visas can be complex and mistakes need to be correctly identified by a trained adviser.

If a mistake is found, then the adviser will help submit a request for your BRP to be amended. Depending on whether you applied for your Tier 4/Student visa outside the UK, or in the UK, the process will be different.

If you applied within the United Kingdom, the adviser will help you submit an administrative review. There is a charge of £80 for this but if the Home Office do accept that a mistake has been made, you will be refunded. You MUST apply to correct any mistakes in conditions of leave within 14 days of receiving your new BRP card so it is very important that you check it carefully when you receive it. Any late applications will likely be refused.

If you applied outside the United Kingdom, the adviser will help you submit an entry clearance correction. There is no charge for this application. Any application to amend conditions of leave on a BRP that was applied for outside of the UK must be made within 3 months of arriving in the UK.

My passport has expired/I have a new passport

During your time in the UK, your passport may change from the one you used to apply for your Tier 4/Student visa. If this happens then you may need to take action.

If you are planning to work in the UK, either part-time or full-time (where permitted), you must transfer your BRP card over to your new passport. Please contact the International Advice team for further guidance.
