NextSteps Live: Monday 19 to Friday 23 July

Come along to our NextSteps Live Programme consisting of a range of 40 minute webinars running throughout the week 19-23 July.

The webinars have been especially designed for Royal Holloway graduates looking to enter the job market. It's a jam packed schedule of nine bespoke sessions covering all aspects of the job hunt. There is something for everyone who is exploring their Next Steps. All webinars can be booked on the Careers Portal and will be delivered via MS Teams.

Monday 19 July

Next Steps Live: Applying for jobs if you have a disability or additional needs 11am-12.00pm

Navigating job or internship application processes can be challenging for differently abled people.

This session will show you how to:
1. Identify employers who have a positive attitude to diversity and will welcome your applications.
2. Decide whether to disclose your disability to a potential employer
3. Communicate your disability to an employer in a way that enables you to position it as an asset.
3. Request adjustments to application processes so you have the greatest chance of success.

Next Steps Live - The online-only recruitment process – What is it and how to succeed 11-11.40am

Not sure what to expect from the recruitment process in this new online-only world? In this short session we will take a quick overview of a typical online-only recruitment process.

Many parts of the recruitment process remain the same as before: CVs, applications, psychometric tests. Other parts were traditionally done face-to-face but have now moved online, such as interviews and assessment centres. We will zoom-in on those newer elements.

Next Steps Live - What to do when you don't know what to do 12-12.40pm

With so much choice it can be hard to know what to do next after graduation. Come to this supportive session, we can help you work out what's important to you and help you to start planning your next steps. We will also give you some ideas about where to find jobs and opportunities you could apply for.

Next Steps Live: Graduating 2021? Jobhunting in the current job market 1.00-1.40pm

If you are graduating this year you may be wondering what the job market will look like in the next few months. Come along to this workshop and find out about the latest employment trends and what you can do to build your skills and make your job search more effective!

Next Steps Live: Beginner’s guide to building your LinkedIn profile 11.00 – 11.45am

What is LinkedIn and how can you use it to leverage your career development and find work opportunities? This workshop will give you an overview of the essential things you need to know about LinkedIn and top tips to get you started.

Next Steps Live: How to build a strong online network 12.00-12.40pm

It can be difficult to develop a strong online network if you feel like you don't know enough professional people to reach out to. We will explore some useful ways to build up a strong LinkedIn network including using University Alumni, joining and contributing to relevant groups & following your top potential employers.  Also, we will share some great hints and tips on writing effective connection requests all while following some key online networking etiquette.

Next Steps Live - Getting started on your side hustle 1.00 – 1.40pm

If you are looking for ways to generate extra income, or the idea of becoming an entrepreneur excites you, then starting a side hustle could be the answer.  This workshop will explore how you can get started with creating a side hustle, share examples of side hustles you can do remotely and look at the benefits and challenges of being your own boss whilst studying or working for an employer.

Next Steps Live: CV workshop 11-11.40am

Writing CVs for an internship or a graduate job? Come along to this session to find out how CVs should change for different jobs, what recruiters look for in a CV and how to quickly write a CV that will get you to the interview for the job you want.

Next Steps Live: Cover letter success 12-12.40pm

You’re responding to a job/internship advert with your CV – so why do they need a cover letter as well? In this short session we will explore what the cover letter is for, how it differs from the CV and how to use a simple structure for creating an effective cover letter that gets you noticed!

Next Steps Live - Applying for unadvertised jobs / internships 1.00-1.40pm

Asking an employer for an internship or job at the same time as enclosing a CV and Cover letter shows initiative and determination. In some areas, particularly for smaller employers and the creative industries, it's a really important way of recruiting. In this session we will discuss how to quickly write an effective application even though you don't have a job description to work from.

Friday 23 July

Next Steps Live - Application Forms for Jobs or Internships 11.00-11.40am

This session will give you tips on how to handle job application forms for jobs, internships or further study. Application forms are often used by larger employers or public sector employers.

We will cover:

- general tips and advice

- how to give a strong personal/supporting statement (commonly at the end of application forms)

- how to answer questions about your skills and experience

Next Steps Live: Succeeding at Interviews – 12.00-12.40pm

If you have an interview, you are well on the way to getting the job. This session will help you understand what recruiters are looking for, how to answer common questions well and what to do if your mind goes blank! We'll show you how to practice video interviews using our video interviewing software and how to get groups of interviewers on your side.
