On Wednesday 23 October 2019 the Equality and Human Rights Commission released a report on racial abuse in UK universities. The findings of the report are extremely concerning for all institutions across the UK higher education sector.

Royal Holloway is a diverse and multi-cultural community of students and staff.  We value our diversity and our community is strengthened by it. Communities should be places where we feel we belong, and where we feel safe and supported.  In our community racial harassment, abuse or violence must not tolerated in any form.

If you are victim of, or witness to, racial harassment, abuse or violence, we would encourage you to contact Student Wellbeing, our Security team, the SU Advice Centre or Surrey Police; we will support you.

If you feel that your safety or the safety of others is at risk, or there is immediate concern, again, please contact our Security team or the Police.  We believe in the values of our university; respect, equality and fairness and all students and staff should feel able to stand up and speak out when we witness racial harassment, abuse or violence whenever we see it, hear it or experience it.

The EHRC report identifies that racial harassment must be addressed by all higher education institutions. As a College, we are committed to raising awareness of the different ways racial harassment manifests itself and the impact it can have, and are working on clearer and anonymous reporting processes and policies that will help us to tackle this abuse in all of its forms.
