As part of Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD), colleagues and students are invited to join events on campus that encourage remembrance, reflection and learning. HMD asks us to consider the past, empathise with those facing persecution today and work together towards a safer future.

Holocaust Memorial Day gathering
Founder’s Chapel
Tuesday 27 January 2026, 1–2pm

All members of our community are welcome to take part in a reflective gathering in Founder’s Chapel. HMD brings people together to learn about the past, empathise with people affected by persecution today, and honour survivors and all those whose lives were changed beyond recognition.

The Holocaust Research Institute at Royalholloway will also be holding the first screening from their Holocaust Memorial Day Commemorative Film Series – ‘Bridging Generations’,  on Thursday 29 January.

Film screening: Giado – Holocaust in the Desert
Shilling Lecture Theatre
Thursday 29 January 2026, 6-8pm

The film tells the story of Yosef Dadosh, one of 3,000 Jews deported from Benghazi to the Giado concentration camp in the Libyan desert. Despite extreme conditions, Yosef kept a secret diary documenting daily life in the camp, hidden for more than seventy years and only discovered after his death. Using animation, archival material and Yosef’s own writing, the film brings this history to life.

A Q&A chaired by Dr Paris Chronakis and Dr Rebecca Glasberg will follow the screening.

Registration: Free but essential
