Extensions and Extenuating Circumstances

Extensions

Can I have an extension for an Alternative Assessments that is replacing an Exam?

Term 3 Alternative Assessments are not eligible for extensions. The alternative assessments have been designed to only take a limited number of hours to complete, so like an exam are not eligible for extensions.

Can I have an extension to my coursework assessment deadline?

You may be able to request an extension for coursework assessments (not alternative assessments) if you are unable to submit on time. Extensions will be considered in line with the current extensions policy, which has had adjustments made in light of the Covid-19 situation. Not all assessments are eligible for extensions, if you aren’t sure, check with your School.

Extensions should be applied for via the extensions system in Campus Connect. Please note you will not be able to apply for an additional extension until two weeks before the new deadline.

What do I do if I can’t submit – even if an extension has been granted?

If you are unable to submit your alternative assessment or coursework assessment (even after an extension where this could be granted) then you will be offered another attempt at the assessment without needing to submit Extenuating Circumstances. Please see the Results & Progression page for further details.

How do I request an extension to my deadline?

If you are a Postgraduate Research student, please contact the Doctoral School for further advice.

As an Undergraduate or Postgraduate Taught student, please request your extension using the steps below:

  1. Read the policy on applications for extensions
  2. Read your departmental handbook to check whether you can request an extension for the assessment
  3. Log in to Campus Connect and select ‘Extensions’ under the ‘My studies’ tab, click on Extensions.
  4. Complete the extensions application and ensure you submit supporting documents with the application, as appropriate.

Please note: if an extension is approved and a new submission date is given, this may affect when you receive your feedback.

When should I request the extension?

Your extension application will be accepted up and until the assessment deadline, but not earlier than 10 working days before.

If you submit your extension request less than 2 working days before your assessment deadline, the College is unable to guarantee that your application will be processed before the deadline.  If you have not received notification from the Extensions system you should submit any work you have completed by the deadline.  If you subsequently received an approval for your application you can resubmit your completed work by the new deadline.

How long can I request an extension for?

You can apply for either a 5 day or 10 day extension depending on your circumstances.  We have temporarily removed the need to supply evidence for any extension application.  Please ensure you provide a description of the circumstances affecting your ability to meet the deadline.   Please only apply for the length of extension you need to minimise delays in marking and provision of feedback.

What type of evidence should I submit to support my application?

We have temporarily removed the need to supply evidence to support you application. Applications will be assessed on the information you are able to provide so if you do have evidence available please submit it with your application.

Late Submissions

Alternative Assessments

If you are having difficulty in submitting your Alternative Assessment on time, for example due to technology issues, then you should email your School as soon as you can and as close to the submission deadline as possible, letting them know the reason why and they will provide you with further advice. Schools will treat such situations carefully and sympathetically.

Alternative Assessments are being offered to replace formal examination and therefore late submissions may be classed as a non-submission. In this situation you will automatically be offered another attempt at the assessment as a First Sit without needing to submit Extenuating Circumstances. Please see the Results & Progression page for further details.

Coursework Assessments

If you submit your coursework late (including late after an extension to your deadline) then it will be subject to the usual late penalties as outlined in the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Taught Regulations. Again you are recommended to contact your School office if you are having difficulties with the submission of work.

Where you are not in a position to submit coursework for submission deadlines that fall after 1 March 2020 then you will automatically be offered another attempt at the assessment without needing to submit Extenuating Circumstances. Please see the Results & Progression page for further details.

Extenuating Circumstances

The deadline for submitting Extenuating Circumstances for 2019/20 has now passed.  Any applications received after 18 June 2020 @ 12:00noon will not be considered.

The EC form will be made available again from 25 June 2020 (for PGT Students only -  to notify us of Extenuating Circumstances that have affected submissions due after 18 June 2020)

We recognise that this is an unprecedented situation so we have put in place some special arrangements for extenuating circumstances as a result of Coronavirus.

The online extenuating circumstances form is available at the link in the 'how can I submit Extenuating Circumstances' section below.

What is happening with Extenuating Circumstances and the situation regarding Coronavirus?

We have put in place several measures as a result of the Covid -19 pandemic:

  • Term 2 assessment deadlines have been adjusted and extensions for eligible assessments can be applied for in line with extensions policy, with adjustments that have been made for Covid -19.
  • If you do not feel in a position to undertake your Term 3 Alternative Assessments for any reason, then you can choose to defer your assessments. Further information is available on the Deferring your Assessment Webpage.
  • For Undergraduate students your results will be considered with a number of 'Safety Net' policies; further information is available on Results and Progression
  • For assessment deadlines after 1 March 2020 until the end of the academic year all students who do not submit or fail their assessments will automatically be given a further attempt appropriate to their current registration. Further information is available on Results and Progression

The above measures have been designed to mitigate the effects of the situation on all students, and you do not have to submit any extenuating circumstances information for these.

My assessment was impacted before the 1 March 2020 how will it be considered?

Extenuating Circumstances applications submitted for assessments that had a submission deadline before 1 March 2020 will be considered by the Extenuating Circumstances Committee, under the existing regulations which are outlined in the Regulations on the Conduct of Assessment so a recommendation can be made to the examination board.
