CLASSICS

Welcome from the Head of Classics

Welcome to the Department of Classics at Royal Holloway. Whether your interests lie in the languages, literatures, philosophy, history or archaeology of ancient Greece and Rome, we have a deep belief in the importance and relevance of the subjects we teach and study, and both our academic and our administrative staff have a firm commitment to helping our students get the most out of their time at university. We have been highly successful in doing this for many years because, as a relatively small department, we are able to get to know our students as individuals and provide or obtain the help and support they need, whether it be academic or personal. Our academics are all experts in their diverse fields, whose teaching is consistently acknowledged as excellent in both internal and external student surveys, while many of the department’s publications are at the very forefront of shaping scholarly opinion in their respective areas.

Whether you are pursuing single honours or joint honours with another subject such as Drama, English, Medieval History, Philosophy, or a modern language, we aim to provide a safe, supportive and academically high-quality pathway through your undergraduate studies which many of our larger and more impersonal competitors struggle to match. We’re glad that you have decided to join us, and believe that you will find you have made a very good choice.

Professor Boris Rankov (MA, DPhil, FSA)
