Welcome Week 2019


 

Welcome to the Department of Computer Science. For all new students, we are excited to have you join us this year and for returning students, a warm welcome back.

The academic year starts with Welcome Week on Monday 23 September 2019, scroll down to find all the information you need for the start of your academic year at the Department of Computer Science.

All students need to collect their attendance clicker from School Helpdesk - see timetable for details. 

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

New Undergraduate Students

All sessions listed in the new undergraduate Welcome Week timetable are compulsory unless otherwise stated.

All the information you need about your courses, your degree programme, detailed reading lists, teaching timetable, etc. will be found on our Information for Current Students page in due course.

If you are studying Computer Science with an Integrated Foundation Year, please see the Integrated Foundation Year page for more information. 

All students will meet their Personal Advisor during Welcome Week and confirm their courses (modules) for the year. You will be given your Advisor's name and the time and place of the meeting in due course.

International students – please also look at the Royal Holloway International website as there are lots of activities arranged specially for you during Welcome Week.

Returning undergraduates

All sessions listed on the returning student Welcome Week timetable are compulsory unless stated otherwise.

All the information you need about your courses, your degree programme, detailed reading lists, teaching timetable, etc. will be found on our Information for Current Students page in due course.

 

POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS- MSc Students

The postgraduate taught Welcome Week timetable.

Things to note:

We are running three optional Pre-Sessional Mathematics classes during Welcome Week – see timetable for times and venues.

We are running test sessions on Databases and Programming (Python) on Tuesday 24 September for exemption from CS5855 and CS5800.

You will need to sign up for a 15 minute slot on Thursday 26 September to meet a Programme Director to make your elective course choices and have your course choice form signed.  There will be sign-up sheets at the Helpdesk in the School Office in Bedford Building 1-29 – you will be able to sign up from Monday 23 September.  Completed and signed course choice forms should be returned to School Office by 12:00 on Friday 27 September so that your choices can be registered ready for the start of teaching on Monday 30 September.

MSc Computational Finance students – there are events for you in the Department of Economics – see Welcome Week timetable and also check the Economics pages.  Note that your slots for meeting with a Programme Director are on both Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 September (12:00-13:00 both days).  You still need to sign up on the sheet at the Helpdesk in the School Office in Bedford Building 1-29 and return your signed form to the School Office by 12:00 on Friday 27 September.

Starting your studies

  • Teaching starts w/c Monday 30 September.  All the information you need about your courses, your degree programme, detailed reading lists, teaching timetable, etc. will be found via our Information for Current Students page in due course.  
  • You have been allocated a personal advisor.  You will meet him or her during the first few weeks of term.
  • If you have questions relating to your Computer Science studies and/or the Department, you can ask at the Helpdesk in the School Office in Bedford Building 1-29.
  • Any questions on accommodation, fees, enrolment, etc. – look for the relevant pages on the College website.

 

POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS- PhD Students

We hope you will be able to join the Department during our Welcome Week when there are many useful introductory events in both the Department and the College.

We particularly look forward to seeing you at our departmental Social Event on Wednesday 25 September, from 18:00 in Students' Union Main Hall – come and meet new and current students (undergraduate and postgraduate) and staff.

International students – please look at the Royal Holloway International website as there are lots of activities arranged specially for you during Welcome Week.

There will be a Doctoral School Welcome Session - details to be confirmed
