Welcome from the Head of Department, Professor Philip Crang
I am delighted to welcome students to the 2019-20 academic year.
Firstly, I want to offer my congratuatlions to all our new first year undergraduate students for gaining a place on our Geography programmes. Welcome onboard! You will be joining one of the best departments in the country for both teaching and research and we are very much looking forward to getting to know you and working with you over the coming years.
If you have visited us, hopefully you will have gained a sense that the Department is a friendly and supportive environment. The role of the student run Geography Society, GeogSoc, is very important in creating this special atmosphere, through organising social, academic and sports events. If you want to find out more about the GeogSoc before your time at Royal Holloway begins then you can visit their Facebook page.
Below are details regarding the academic aspects and timetable for Welcome Week and guidance on preparations before you arrive. Otherwise, if you want to whet your appetite for some of what you’ll be doing in your first year with us, you will be coming to Spain in January 2020 on our Nerja fieldtrip; to get a taste of the trip you can check out this video from a couple of years back, made by one of our recently graduated students, Matthew Phillips, when he was in his first year with us.
I also want to welcome our new postgraduate students, on both our Masters and PhD programmes. The Directors of your programme, or for PhD students your supervisors, will have been in touch directly. One of the highlights of our Welcome Week events is our Postgraduate Symposium, held this year on Wednesday 25th September, where current PhD students organise a day of presentations on their research projects. Again, more details are provided below.
I look forward to meeting you in a few weeks. Enjoy the rest of your summer, and congratulations again!
