Looking for volunteers?

Among the College's 9000 students and 1500 staff are numerous volunteers with a wide range of skills and interests. So, whether you are looking for volunteers for a one-off event or are seeking to fill a regular volunteer opportunity, we may be able to help. Currently we have over 2300 registered volunteers who are keen to get involved in the community. More than 240 organisations have already registered to join our Community Action Partners' Network.

There are several ways we partner and support local organisations looking for volunteers...

Community Action Partner Registration

If you are a volunteer involving charity, not-for-profit or community organisation then Royal Holloway's Volunteering office would like to hear from you. To become a Community Partner you will need to register as an organisation with Community Action. Benefits of becoming a community partner are as follows:

  • We will profile you on the Community Partners webpage, Vinspired webpage, and 'Like' your Facebook page
  • We will communicate with you regarding volunteer availability
  • We will offer assistance with DBS disclosures if required
  • We will provide the opportunity to promote your volunteering opportunities through on-campus events such as the Volunteering Fair and Get Involved Week (Oct), and other recruitment events during the year.
  • We will make our Response Team available for your events and one-off activities
  • We will invite you to our biennial Community Partners' Conference (Sept 2018)
  • We will invite you to our annual Community Partners' Lunch (Feb 2018)
  • We will invite you to our annual Volunteering Awards Celebration if you currently have active Royal Holloway volunteers (May 2018)

We endeavor to confirm whether we have suitable volunteers registered with us. If we don't have suitable candidates registered we will advertise your opportunity among students and staff. The more specific information you supply, the easier it will be to find suitable volunteers. It would also be helpful if you could give the Community Action office as much notice of your volunteer requirements as possible. *

Further information for organisations is available in our Community Partners Guide to Volunteering.

If you would like to involve Royal Holloway volunteers in the work of your organisation then please complete and submit the Community Partners Registration Form.

Festival of Volunteering

Community Partners are invited to request a stand to recruit new volunteers within our Community Action zone at our annual Festival of Volunteering during Welcome Week.

If you are not a Community Partner you will need to register as an organisation with Community Action in advance.

This year we will be hosting the Festival of Volunteering instead of the fairs.

Get Involved Sessions

Community Partners are invited to book an introduction session to follow up the recruitment process with potential new volunteers. These are usually held in the Davison Building event space, depending upon availability.

If you are not a Community Partner you will need to register as an organisation with Community Action in advance.

To book a Get Involved introduction session  complete and submit the Booking Request Form

Volunteering Abroad Information

Overseas  volunteer-involving organisations are asked to register using the Volunteering Abroad Organisation Registration form.

To ensure international volunteering is done ethically we aim to encourage students to be involved with effective, sustainable longer term opportunities where possible. This includes working with locally led projects, exchange of skills & knowledge, and facilitate cross-cultural understanding.

Once confirmed each organisation will be able to request a stand within our Volunteering Abroad zone at the annual Royal Holloway Festival of Volunteering, taking place in Welcome Week by submitting a Booking Request Form.

International Students' Events

Our international team leaders host an events aimed at introducing the UK volunteering culture to our overseas students. This is often done best by students being able to directly meet some of our Community Partners at these events. We are privileged to have such a diverse volunteer base with such a wide cultural background. If you have specific volunteering opportunities that are suited to international students then let us know,

To request a stand at our next International Students' Event send an email to include details of what you would like to offer.

Market Days

Community Partners are invited to book a stall at one of the popular Market Days in the Students' Union to recruit volunteers. These occur weekly on Tuesday daytimes during term-time, and due to other regular fruit & veg and chinese food stalls attract a good footfall of students.

To select and request a date for a stall complete and submit the Booking Request Form.

Community Partner Feedback

Throughout the year we contact our Community Partners for details on the volunteers from Royal Holloway you have had working with during the year, this is as part of our 'Get Recognised' volunteer award scheme. Community Partners are asked to verify activity for each volunteer they have had placed with them. This information is vital for us to be able to recognise the volunteers through schemes such as; Community Action Volunteering Awards, vinspired awards, and the Royal Holloway Passport Award.

We also have an annual Community Partners Feedback Survey in the summer which enables us to find out what has worked well in the past year and what can be improved for the next.

Community Research Hub

How can our researchers help your organisation?

Are you a charity, community organisation, campaign group or other not for profit organisation in need of research to support your work?

Researchers at Royal Holloway conduct research and provide expertise to a wide variety of external partners. Previously partner organisations have submitted requests to meet their research needs, which vary from case to case but might involve:

  • Conducting a survey, focus groups, ethnography, needs analysis, etc.
  • Analysing data.
  • Writing reports with recommendations.
  • Conducting desk research and/or literary reviews.

The Community Research Hub is a pilot scheme investigating whether we’ve the capacity to expand on those research partnerships. If you need some information or research conducted, get in touch to register your interest and we’ll try to find a postgraduate student or academic to match your needs (usually on a voluntary basis for registered charities).

If you would like to discuss an opportunity then please email the Community Research Hub. An organisation must be registered as a community partner with Community Action via the online form before the opportunity can be advertised to our students.

Community Project Team Requests

During the academic year student volunteers get involved with special one-off projects in the local community. We respond to specific community project requests made by community organisations, charities and groups. They are usually carried out by a volunteer team as part as one of our termly events:

  • Make a Difference Day, in late October
  • The Big Spring Clean, early March
  • Volunteers' Week, in early June

If you have a community project request and you would like to invite Royal Holloway volunteers to get active and serve the community, then complete and submit the Community Project Request Form

Further to this we have the Royal Holloway Volunteering Response Team avialble to assist with one-off activities and events.

Community Partners' Conference

Our next Partners' Conference will be taking place on 11th September 2018, hosted by Katie Normington, Senior Vice Principal, and our keynote guest speaker will be Shaun Delaney, Volunteering Development Manager at NCVO. All are welcome to join us, with bookings now open via our webform.

This day conference is aimed at serving and better connecting with the network of charities and community organisations we are associated with. This is a free biennial event. As part of the programme there is a series of workshop sessions including; Volunteer Recognition, Students' Union Opportunities, and Volunteer Recruitment. We are expecting 100 delegates to attend this free event, including volunteer co-ordinators or supervisors who manage volunteers. This is the perfect event for interested organisations to come along to find out more.

For our third Partners' Conference in September 2016 we were joined by Charlotte Hill CEO, #iwill (Step Up To Serve). Previous to this we have held Partners' Conferences on a biennial basis, for more information from our previous events see the press releases for 2012 and 2014

We encourage all Community Action Partners to have developed a Volunteer Policy and request all to have risk assessments and insurance for volunteers in place.

Unfortunately, we will be unable to recruit volunteers for you if:

  • Your organisation does not insure volunteers or have a risk assessment available.
  • You are seeking to replace paid staff with volunteers.
  • Your organisation re-numerates volunteers (excluding expenses incurred while volunteering).
