Professor Paul Layzell lends a hand to student volunteers during Volunteering Week 2014
Student volunteers from Royal Holloway, University of London, have been joined by members of the University’s senior management team as Volunteering Week 2014 (Tuesday 3 June to Friday 6 June) begins.
The University’s Volunteering Week coincides with the 30th anniversary of National Volunteers’ Week (Sunday 1 June to Saturday 7 June), and to celebrate the milestone event, Royal Holloway’s senior staff have rolled up their sleeves in order to help students reach their target of completing 30 community projects this week.
Yesterday, Community Action volunteers were joined by Principal Professor Paul Layzell at Christchurch Infant School, Virginia Water, to take part in a garden renovation project, which involved painting children’s playhouses, removing soil and leaves, and taking apart old wooden raised beds.
Throughout the week, other projects will include painting the community hub at Heathrow Special Needs Centre, developing a sensory garden at St. Peter’s Hospital, in Chertsey, and litter picking in Englefield Green.
Sports sessions for local primary schools, run by the Students’ Union sports clubs with the support of RHUL Sport, are being held on campus this week, and Students’ Union societies and media outlets, with the support of the Student Activities team, are hosting a variety of activity workshops at residential care homes and primary schools.
Professor Paul Layzell said: “Our students demonstrate a huge commitment to the local community throughout the year by volunteering across a wide range of projects. Joining in with Volunteering Week has been a great way for staff to show their support to our volunteers and contribute to projects that will greatly benefit different sections of our community.”
Royal Holloway’s Volunteering Week 2014 is sponsored by Enterprise rent-a-car, whose staff are also joining student volunteers on a number of projects.
