Students from Royal Holloway packed the annual Volunteering Fair in the Student’s Union this week as they looked for opportunities to work with charities and community organisations.
More than 100 students arrived within the first half-an-hour to discuss projects and fundraising initiatives with 30 groups, including Age UK, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, the British Red Cross, the British Heart Foundation and the National Autistic Society.
The Mayor of Runnymede, Councillor Peter Waddell, opened the Volunteering Fair before being introduced to the different community organisations by Mike Johnson, Director of Student Experience at Royal Holloway.
Phil Simcock, Community Action Volunteer Manager at Royal Holloway, said: “Our 8th annual Volunteering Fair was a massive success with more than 350 students eager to find out more information about how they can volunteer within the local community.
“Everyone who attended spoke directly with our partner organisations about the volunteer opportunities available to get involved with.”
The event on Wednesday, 15 October, was organised by Community Action, which works with more than 200 community organisations and has registered more than 500 new volunteers in less than a month since the start of the academic year.
With more organisations wishing to attend than spaces available, a second Volunteering Fair will take place in the Student’s Union on Wednesday 19 November.
