Volunteering flying high at The Runnymede Volunteer Awards 2016

This week saw the College host the Runnymede Volunteer Awards, now in its second year. Royal Holloway’s Community Action working in partnership with Voluntary Support North Surrey and Runnymede Borough Council celebrated over 45 individuals with awards and recognition for their amazing contribution to the community.

Global volunteering with local impact

With partner British Airways supporting this year’s event, Volunteering Programme Manager, Carmel Khan spoke of the company’s global programme of volunteering, and its local impact, also sponsoring the Lifetime Achievement for Volunteering Award. During the past academic year Royal Holloway students have completed 7,000 hours, of which those receiving their volunteering accreditation contributed an impressive 1,700 hours of voluntary activity to this total.

The Mayor of Runnymede Cllr Alan Alderson and College Principal Paul Layzell presented awards and certificates of recognition, including:

Voluntary Support North Surrey Young Volunteer Award:  Elisabeta-Elena Balasoiu for her work with Parents & Children Together 

Project of the year: Food4Lunch

Community Action Partner of the year: The Village Centre

Vinspired – recognising students who have contributed volunteering hours

30 hours- Jasper Lee
50 hours- Isabella Froud

100 hours- Rose Boutflower

Community Action Cup: Christian Union

Mayor’s Cup for student volunteer of the year: Mandy Sze  

Additionally over 40 “Get Recognised” certificates were awarded to students who have volunteered for more than 30 hours over the course of the academic year.
