One of the most important aspects of the conference is the theme, it must appeal to a broad range of fields and practices. We aim to select a theme that will draw attention to commonalities and points of divergence, and encourage dialogue, debate, and collaboration between practitioners from diverse working contexts. The conference invites contributions from postgraduate students, early-career researchers, and individuals and organisations undertaking innovative creative and cultural work. In an attempt to facilitate an open flexible format, we accept academic papers, performances, readings, workshops, installations, and screenings. Additionally, we offer multiple ways of presenting work – before a live audience, in an exhibition space, and via the online publication. The programme reflects the close relationship between the conference, gallery, and publication.
The theme for 2013 was Generative Constraints. We invited diverse theorist-practitioners to share their work – Jane Rendell, Tim Etchells, Matthew Goulish and Lin Hixson (Every House Has A Door), and Amanda Beech (who is generously sponsored by Kingston University’s practice research unit). In addition, we ran an Evening Programme (in association with the publication), which will include additional performances and readings. The event was hosted by the Centre for Creative Collaboration in London.
The PbR Conference was part-funded by the Departments of Drama & Theatre, English, Media Arts and Music as well as the Faculty Research Initiative Bid at Royal Holloway and the Practice Research Unit at Kingston University.
