Please note that the Departmental Style Guide covers only the most commonly used types of sources. For information on how to reference other types of material, please consult MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 7th ed. (2009), which also contains invaluable advice about evaluating sources, avoiding plagiarism, conducting research, and using correct punctuation. We strongly advise you to purchase a copy, which will also give you access to additional resources at www.mlahandbook.org.

The Department runs a series of research training sessions called Ways of Working. To find out information about these sessions, please login to the Ways of Working Moodle page. Please note: these sessions are compulsory for first year PhD Drama students.

Research students may be interested in attending the Practice-based research programme, which is currently run from the Drama Department.  The programme consists of a core curriculum of six Skills Workshops as well as a Seminar, Lectures and an annual Student-Led Conference. The aim of the programme is to bring together researchers from across different disciplines, opening up a space to share and present work as a community of practice and learning. You can find out further details about the programme on the Practice-based research programme website.

The College runs the Researcher Development Programme, where you will meet students from all disciplines.  The programme consists of a series of transferable skills courses designed for research students to help develop their skills alongside their research. You can find out further details about the programme on the Doctoral School website.

The department runs this grant scheme to provide financial support when you are invited to give a conference paper closely related to the subject of your research. The grant is available to all PhD students, but it is recommended that students apply for this fund in their 2nd or 3rd year. No more than £300 may be awarded over the course of your study.

To apply for the grant you must submit your request, along with a supporting email from your supervisor, to the Director of Graduate Studies, Dr Chris Megson. If your request is approved then this will allow you to claim back expenses incurred as a result of attending the conference, to a maximum of £300. Please make sure you keep all of your original receipts for your expense claim.

The grant is not usually available to cover travel or other expenses, but this may be possible in particular circumstances. Please contact the Director of Graduate Studies for further advice.
