Tips for before you come

Ke Zheng came to study at Royal Holloway in 2009 - here she gives her tips on the things you should remember to do before leaving for Royal Holloway.

Finance

It is a good idea to bring an international bank card from your home country and a small account of cash, as opening a bank account in the UK can be a length process. Living expenses in the UK may be higher than your home country, so make sure you budget well.

Accommodation

Make sure you arrange your accommodation as early as possible - you don't want to arrive in the UK with nowhere to live! If you plan to arrive in the UK before your course starts, and would like to move into your room, make sure that you have a confirmation from the College that this is possible.

Meet and greet at the airport

You should definitely try to arrive in the UK on the dates when the International Student Support Office is arranging the free airport transfer service.  It means you don't need to worry about getting to the campus yourself, and can enjoy your first impressions of the UK!   If this service is not available on your day of arrival, ask for advice on alternative transportation - don't simply get a taxi from the airport, as they can be expensive.

Luggage

When it comes to packing, consider bringing warm waterproof cloths as the weather in the UK can be very unpredictable and cold in September/October.  Make sure you bring all the documents relating to your study (such as offer letters) in your hand luggage, as the immigration officer may want to see them when you arrive.
