Applying

Follow our step-by-step guide below to make an application through the Erasmus exchange scheme:

Step 1: Check that your university has an Erasmus partnership

Does your home institution have an Erasmus partnership with Royal Holloway, University of London?

Due to the high volume of applications, we are able to accept Erasmus applications ONLY from our Erasmus partners. Royal Holloway does not accept applications from Erasmus free-movers.

You can find a list of Royal Holloway's Erasmus partners on the page.

If your home institution is not one of our Erasmus partners, you may consider applying as a Study Abroad student.

Step 2: Nomination

In order to apply as an Erasmus student, you need to be nominated by your home university.

Contact the Erasmus Co-ordinator at your home university for further information about the selection procedures at your institution.  We strongly advise that you have English language proficiency of level B2 and therefore we do not require incoming students to submit an IELTS certificate unless they are not an EU citizen and therefore need to obtain a UK student visa.

Your home institution Erasmus Coordinator needs to send your nomination through the Partner Universities Nomination Form.

Deadline for receipt of Erasmus nominations:

  • 15 April for September starters
  • 15 October for January starters

Step 3: Choose your courses

You may apply for course units in up to three academic departments. However, please be aware that taking courses in a number of departments may lead to timetable clashes.

In most cases, students will take courses alongside degree-seeking students. However, due to the popularity of certain courses, some departments have a restricted ability to accept Erasmus applications.

Courses must be chosen from the Departmental Course Options for Visiting Students and you should read the accompanying guidelines before making your selection.

Please note the courses you indicate on your Visiting Students Application Form are requested courses only.  All courses are subject to suitability and availability and the College is unable to guarantee that a student will be admitted onto the requested courses. The final decision on the course units offered will be at the discretion of the academic departments where they are taught.

In order to cover the eventuality that selected courses may be full, unavailable, or unsuitable, students staying for the full year should select courses totalling 5-6 course units or more.  Students staying for Term 1 only or Terms 2 and 3 should select courses totalling 3-4 course units.

The following specific departmental limitations also apply:

1.  In most cases, students should first select courses in the Royal Holloway department which has set up the Erasmus agreement. Students may then select courses to improve English language skills (such as Contemporary Britain). Depending on course availability, Erasmus students may then select courses from other departments.

2.  Due to a high volume of requests, applications for the following departments are highly competitive and will be rigorously assessed on merit and on coherence of previous academic background:

  • English Department
  • Media Arts Department

Please note, the departments of English and Media Arts do not have any Erasmus agreements. It cannot be guaranteed that a course requested in these subjects will be offered.

3.  The History Department is only able to accept applicants from Universities with whom they have an Erasmus agreement:

  • Université degli Studi di Siena, Italy
  • Università degli Studi di Roma, 'La Sapienza'
  • University of Oslo, Norway
  • Université de Paris X-Nanterre (Paris X)
  • Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, Spain
  • Université François Rabelais, Tours
  • Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg
  • Freie Universität Berlin

Erasmus students from the universities above must be studying History full-time for the department to consider an application.

4.  The Politics and International Relations Department is only able to accept Erasmus applications from the Université Robert Schuman, Strasbourg and Koç University.

5.  The Drama Department is only able to accept Erasmus applications from Trinity College Dublin.

Step 4: Complete an application online

To register and apply please go to Royal Holloway Direct.

In addition to the application form, you will need to submit the required supporting documents online:

  • An authorised transcript of your university studies
  • An English translation of your transcript (if necessary)

Please note that incomplete applications cannot be considered and original copies of supporting documents cannot be returned.

Deadline for receipt of applications:

  • 24 May for September starters
  • 24 October for January starters

Please note that applications will not be accepted after this deadline.

Step 5: Accept your offer and study plan

  • You will be sent an offer letter by email.  This is an offer for a place to study at Royal Holloway, subject to satisfactory agreement of your course choices.  Once you have accepted this offer, you will be able to apply for accommodation.
  • We will then liaise with our academic departments on your behalf, and they review your application to assess your suitability for the requested courses.  They reserve the right to suggest alternative suitable courses if you are not suitably qualified or if classes are full.
  • Once your courses have been approved, you will be sent your Study Plan to approve.  In most cases, these will be the courses that you will take, but occasionally slight changes may need to be made during your first week on campus, due to timetable clashes or other unforeseen circumstances.

Step 6: Apply for Accommodation

  • Erasmus students coming to Royal Holloway are eligible to apply for campus accommodation in the halls of residence. You can find more information on the Accommodation web pages.
  • You should ensure that you apply before the deadline given in your offer letter.  Applications made after this date will normally be processed, but availability cannot be guaranteed.
  • All enquiries relating to accommodation should be directed to Student Accommodation at student-enquiries@royalholloway.ac.uk.
