Project Title: Curriculum Mapping
"Working with Steven Cowling of Feedback Instruments, a company which makes and distributes lab equipment, this was my first chance to apply my physics knowledge in a work environment. Feedback Instruments sells a large range of equipment, from sensors to carts and tracks to classic apparatus such as the ripple tank. My task was to look at the latest GCSE and A-level course specifications and find the equipment to suit each of the principles being presented - this is known as curriculum mapping.
The work was challenging, but the help was always there. As it went on, I realised it wasn't just about finding the correct single items, but choosing a pick 'n' mix of various others to show phenomenon, as well as questioning whether there are easy and cheaper options schools would choose instead. Later, I had the opportunity to be a sort of salesman for a day and had a great time experiencing a different, more practical side of the job. Skills I picked up from this placement are invaluable and for anyone, like me, who isn't sure what they will do after their degree, I would highly recommended a placement in industry."
