Regulations you need to know

Coming to university means that there are some rules and regulations you need to follow. As a student at Royal Holloway you have to tell us you've read, understood and accepted all of them. Some are about your studies and some are about your behaviour in general. 

We’ve picked out some of the most important rules and regulations here. Don’t forget, if you want to read them in full you can find them here on the College rules and regulations website.



You're here to learn, after all!

Depending on what course you’re on you might have all kinds of stuff on your academic timetable: classes, lectures, seminars, field trips, experiments, all night vigils, etc. If it’s on your timetable, it’s compulsory! If you honestly can’t attend (maybe you're fighting off that dreaded freshers flu!) you need to let your department know as soon as possible.

If you’re ill and unable to attend for more than three days you need to send us a notification of absence form.  If you’re ill for more than seven days you’ll need to see a medical practitioner.

We also expect that you’ll complete all the work that’s required of you: essays, assignments, projects and so on.  If you don’t, it might stop you being able to progress on your course.

A job means more money, and money is good! Just be careful of taking on too much work while you’re studying.

Getting a part-time job is a great way to earn a bit of extra money while you study, plus it could be great experience for your CV.  If you do decide to get a part-time job, just be careful you don’t sign up for too much.

Even if you’re not studying flat out right away, come exam season you might find you’re much busier with your studies. Regulations say you can’t work more than 20 hours a week during term-time, but even that’s quite a lot. Be sensible!

If you’re thinking about getting a part-time job at Royal Holloway, come along to our Part-Time Jobs Fair on Wednesday 2 October from 11.00am – 3.00pm in the Students’ Union Main Hall: you can meet loads of local employers and chat with our specialists at the Careers & Employability Service, who can help you find a part-time job.

That’s right. You’ve seriously made it by getting in to Royal Holloway. It’s got one of the best university campuses in the UK, beautiful Victorian buildings, lush parkland and a lovely leafy atmosphere. A beautiful, peaceful, happy community. Let's make sure we keep it that way!

You can get in serious trouble by not treating our campus with respect.  Smoking indoors?  Not allowed.  Barbecues, fireworks, open fires – not allowed.  Tampering with fire safety equipment (for example, by covering a smoke detector) – definitely the kind of thing that can get you into serious trouble.  Be wise.

...and how we both need to take care of it.

We have to hold all kinds of information about you in order to deliver your course, such as your name, address and contact details.  We understand this is sensitive stuff, so we won’t sell it or just give it out to anyone who asks.  This is detailed in our Data Protection Policy.

It’s also important that you keep your data up-to-date with us. If you’re being paid a bursary and you change your name or your bank details, for example, you might find we’re not able to pay you if you haven't informed us of these changes. Make sure to let us know if any data or your personal situation changes.

THE Students' Union

Check out how the SU operates

Upon enrolling at the College you automatically become a member of the Students' Union, and they’ll represent you on both a local and a national level.

As a member of the Students’ Union you are expected to follow the Code of Conduct stated in Byelaw J of the SU constitution.

If you’re a user of the SU, you will need to follow the Code of Conduct & Disciplinary Policy that covers their licensed premises, events and venues.

The whole Royal Holloway team is here to make sure you have a great experience. We know we’re not perfect though, and we recognise that sometimes things don’t work out.  Maybe something went wrong in your Hall, you didn’t get the marks you thought you deserved, or you’ve been let down by us somehow.

If you’ve got a problem with anything at Royal Holloway, the first and most important thing to do is to talk to us about it. If we know there’s a problem, we’ll always try and help.

It might be obvious who to talk to if you’ve got a problem (like your Hall Reception to fix that whistling air conditioning unit in your room, or your academic department about a problem with your course) while at other times it might be less obvious. If you don’t know who to talk to, speak to our Student Services Centre – even if they can’t help themselves they’ll know where you need to go. You can also email the Student Services Centre team or reach them by phone on 01784 276641.

Hopefully we’ll be able to sort your problem out quickly and easily. If things still aren’t working and you feel that the issue should have been resolved, you might need to make a formal academic appeal or complaint.
