David Cesarani Scholarship Fund
Holocaust Research Centre, Royal Holloway, University of London
Professor David Cesarani OBE was widely acknowledged as one of the world’s foremost authorities on Jewish history and particularly the Holocaust. Amongst his research are seminal works such as Eichmann: His Life and Crimes (2006); Major Farran’s Hat: Murder, Scandal and Britain’s War Against Jewish Terrorism (2009); and most recently his magnum opus Final Solution: The Fate of the Jews 1933-49.
David died suddenly and unexpectedly last year. He was Director of the Holocaust Research Centre which continues to be the leading academic centre of its kind in Europe and is internationally recognised for its research, teaching, public advocacy and creative work. David played a very active public role in Holocaust Memorial Day remembrance. He was a key member of the UK Delegation to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and was the Historical Adviser to the Prime Minister’s Holocaust Commission.
In honour of David, and to provide a lasting legacy to his dedicated work, Royal Holloway is establishing a Scholarship Fund in David’s name. The Fund will support a postgraduate student each year in the Centre for as long as finances remain available.
Following generous gifts from over 25 donors, including The Kobler Trust, sufficient funds have been raised to support a postgraduate student in the Holocaust Research Institute for 20 years. The inaugural David Cesarani, Kobler Scholarship will be undertaken by BA English & Classical Studies student, Niamh, who will begin an MA in Holocaust Studies in September 2017.
The need
Our ambitious goal is to establish a dedicated endowment fund, providing much longer term support for future generations of students of Holocaust research. As such we welcome any donation however big or small to help us reach this target.
If you would like to discuss the Fund further please contact Laura Coates in the Development and Alumni Relations Department on laura.coates@royalholloway.ac.uk or on 01784 44 3100.
