Checklist and student tips

Before you leave your home country, it’s important that you have taken all the right steps to ensure your arrival in the UK runs as smoothly as possible.

To help you out, we’ve put together some tips from some of our current students:

Have you obtained a student visa, where necessary, for your course?

IMPORTANT: Please note that you are unable to study in the UK if you only hold a visitor visa.  Guidelines on the visa application process can be found here.

Do you need any health related documentation?

Take a look at our Health and Medical Advice pre-departure pages for further information.

Do you have all of the documentation that you will need when arriving in the UK and have you taken photocopies in case the originals get lost?

- Your current passport and visa

- driver’s license

- College offer letter

- list of important contacts and telephone numbers

- documentation showing proof of funding (sufficient for tuition and living)

- letter from sponsor confirming to pay fees (if appropriate)

- documentation showing Conditions of College offer have been met (e.g. English language competency certificates)

- passport sized photographs x 6

- documentation showing accommodation arrangements

Have you signed up for the free airport collection (if arriving on relevant days) or made arrangements to travel to Royal Holloway?

 

Have you started the enrolment process by signing up online?

 

Have you made a note of the Orientation Programme for international students?

Finance

Have you considered paying your full year’s tuition fee in advance to qualify for the early payment discount?

If you sign up online and pay your full year’s tuition fee by 5 September 2017, you could qualify for an early payment discount.

Have you decided whether to pay your fees in advance or pay in instalments?

Have you prepared a budget?

Have you received approval to remove funds from your home country (if needed)?

 

Have you arranged access to enough cash to cover your first few days in the UK?

 

Have you purchased appropriate travel/health/personal possessions insurance?

University insurance will not cover you for any loss or damage to your possessions whether you are staying in private or university accommodation.

Accommodation (university hall of residence)

Have you submitted an online application for accommodation?

Have you received an electronic contract from the Accommodation Office and formally accepted it?

 If you are a new undergraduate joining us in September 2017, and have submitted an application for accommodation, you should have now received an email offering you accommodation in Halls. If you haven't heard from us please get in touch.

Have you made a note of which hall of residence you will be in and your floor / room number?

Information on arrival arrangements for Halls of Residence is available online.

Accommodation (private)

Have you made arrangements for temporary accommodation for when you first arrive, while you look for a house?

 

Have you looked for private housing on the College’s Housesearch website, which lists properties still available in the local area?

Have you ensured that you have sufficient funds available to pay for any expenses while looking, and then also to pay for a deposit once you have found a place?

A typical deposit for a room can be anything up to two months’ rent in advance.
