Participation in extracurricular activities is strongly encouraged provided it doesn't interfere with your studies. In case you don't have enough maths in your life, you could try one (or more) of the following!
Student's Union - Maths Society
Our Mathematics Society is a place for both Maths students and those who are interested in the subject to meet, socalise and collaborate. We organise social and academic events and often work together with other societies to expand our members' network.
If you join, you'll get the chance to attend lectures featuring internal and external guest speakers, social events, career-focused lectures and activity days, go on trips, get deals on our merchandise and take part in support classes.
Although it's quite a new society it has an amazing committee, which is full of ideas to expand the society and committed to making it an enjoyable and worthwhile experience for all.
As a department we're excited by the enthausism of this society and get involved in many of their events.

Coulter McDowell Lecture
Every year in the Autumn term, the Department of Mathematics invites a high-profile speaker to give the Annual Coulter Mc Dowell Lecture. This year's lecture took place on 30th October 2018 and was given by Dr Lara Alcock from Loughborough University.
These lectures, though always on a mathematical topic, are accessible to a wider audience and are attended by Mathematics staff, postgraduate students and undergraduate students alike, and also by people from the local community.
Past speakers include Professor Rosemary Bailey, Professor Peter Cameron, Professor Jon Keating, Simon Singh, and Professor Marcus du Sautoy. A full list of speakers is available here.

Marking and leading workshops
Postgraduate students and talented undergraduate students frequently assist teaching staff with marking course work of students from lower years, and leading course workshops. This is an excellent way to broaden your horizons, it is good for your CV, and pays a little too.
