Mathematical Software
Mathematica
Mathematica 9 software should be available in all CC labs, as well as in the Undergraduate Teaching lab in C103. In the CC labs, you will find Mathematica 9 under the path Start → Programs → Academic Applications → Maths → Mathematica → Wolfram Mathematica 9.
Please find here an introduction to Mathematica.
Mathematica is available to students for free. Please vist the Computer Centre website here for details of how to obtain a copy. The software is available on an annual licence which will expire in July, but can be renewed each year while you remain a student.
Maple TA
You may be asked to use a software application called Maple TA for the worksheets in some courses. This is usually administered through Moodle, but in case you need it, you can log in to it here with your CC username and password, from any computer (including at home). You can also find a link to it in the CC labs at Start → Programs → Academic applications → Maths → Maple TA.
Minitab
Minitab statistical software should also be available in C103 and all CC labs. In the CC labs, please follow the path Start → Programs → Current Applications → Minitab → MINITAB 16 → Minitab 16 Statistical Software English.
LaTeX is a 'document preparation system' that is widely used to write mathematics.
LaTeX is available in the Undergraduate Teaching Lab in C103 and in all CC labs through the integrated document environment TeXnicCenter, which can also be installed on your own PC. To use LaTeX in the CC labs, please follow the path Start → Programs → Current Applications → LaTeX → TeXnicCenter → TeXnicCenter.
To use LaTeX at home, you need both a LaTeX installation and a LaTeX editor
-
LaTeX installation: We recommend MiKTeX (free software) as a LaTeX installation for Windows users, or TeX Live (also free) for linux.
-
LaTeX editor: TeXnicCenter (free Windows software), WinEdt (Windows shareware) or Kile (free linux software).
- Example LaTeX document in LaTeX format. You should be able to save this file with a '.tex' extension, and open it in a LaTeX editor. Here is the same LaTeX document in PDF format (three pages), which is what it should look like when you compile it.
- LaTeX Template. This is a template specifically designed for MSc dissertations (although could easily be adapted to other scenarios).
To learn how to use LaTeX, use Dr. Kay's LaTeX training website, while Dr. Wildon's Writing Mathematics for MSc/MSci Projects tells you more about what to write rather than how to do it.
