GM3219 German Dissertation

Convenor: Dr Jon Hughes

Overview:

This option gives students of German the chance to engage in research on a topic of interest to them. Please note that choices of topics are dependent upon the availability of a suitable supervisor, and must be submitted to the convenor by a published deadline early in Term 1 of the final year. If you are interested in writing a dissertation we highly recommend that you start thinking it about early and contact the convenor as early as possible.

Dissertation topics must be of an academic nature and allow students to show scholarly rigour and to apply the skills they have acquired in their courses. Recent examples of dissertation topics include:

  • the depiction of Hitler in recent German film and literature;
  • the portrayal of the GDR in film;
  • the figure of the soldier in twentieth-century literature;
  • memory in post-war German literature;
  • representations of women in the plays of Brecht;
  • the female Bildungsroman.

Assessment:

Dissertations are to be 4,500- 5000 words in length.

Dissertation writers will be expected to attend a School-wide dissertation briefing to be held in Term 1.
