Overview:

IT1050 is a core language course for Year 1 students on the post A-Level pathway. It comprises a written and an oral component. There are three hours of seminars per week (Written, Oral and Practice) as well as a grammar lecture taught fortnightly.

The lessons are taught using a communicative approach and are conducted in Italian.

In the Written component, students will acquire competency in reading comprehension and commentary writing. They will read and analyse a variety of articles from Italian newspapers or the internet. They will learn to answer questions on them as well as express their views and reflections.

In the Oral component, students will have the opportunity to explore a selection of topics related to Italian culture and society through the study of contemporary written and aural material such as songs and clips of Italian feature films, documentaries and news. They will be able to acquire the skills to structure oral presentations as well as take part in informal debates in Italian. They will have the opportunity to carry out a range of activities including listening comprehension exercises and role play.

Grammatical structures will be studied in context in accordance with students’ specific needs as they arise in both the written and the oral classes.

In the Practice component students will focus on grammar and lexicon and complete the first year grammar syllabus by carrying out a variety of specific grammar and vocabulary exercises and games.

In the Grammar lectures, students will familiarize themselves with both simple and complex sentence constructions. They will be required to revise Italian grammar independently by carrying out a series of exercises available on Moodle.
