ML3308 Research-led International Film dissertation

Terms: 1 and 2
Convenor: Jon Hughes

Assessment: 5,000-word dissertation (100%)

Overview

This half-unit enables you to write a dissertation of 5,000 words in English on a suitable, approved topic of your choice for which appropriate supervision is available. It offers you the opportunity to produce an extended piece of independent, research-led work of greater depth and scope than is permitted by the shorter word-limits of other courses.

The subject of the dissertation should be chosen by you and relate to an aspect of International Film, understood broadly. Final titles must be agreed by a supervisor, with whom you will meet after submitting your proposed topic to the convenor by an advertised deadline at the start of Term 1. Topics may be comparative (covering multiple films and/or film cultures) or more narrowly focused (for example on a single significant film or the work of one director). They should allow for an appropriate level of academic rigour and will require independent research on your part.

You will attend two Dissertation group workshops, the first at the start of the academic year, the second towards the end of term 2, and a number of formal individual supervision sessions with one or two appropriate academic staff members; the length and frequency of these sessions will be arranged with supervisors although the total amount of this teaching will not exceed two hours over the year. These sessions will include methodological advice, discussion of the plan, monitoring and feedback, as well as topic-specific discussion. Tailored training sessions run by the Information Services are also organised.
