ML3205 Trends in Contemporary Theory

Essay 30%; 70% exam

This course provides students with an understanding of key topics and trends in contemporary literary and cultural theory. It covers issues such as gender, desire, power, consumption, and ethics, introducing students to the breadth and richness of that body of thought known as 'theory'. Students develop their analytical abilities and their critical awareness as they encounter some of the most testing and exciting thinkers of recent times. In four five-week blocks, the course explores critical approaches to Power and Discourse; Capitalism, Consumerism, Globalization; Gender and Desire; History, Memory, Ethics.
