SN3112 Spanish American Literature: An Overview

Assessment: Formative exercise (0%); Long essay of 3,000-3,500 words (80%); Oral presentation (20%).
Essays may be written in English or Spanish. No extra points will be awarded for writing in Spanish. The oral presentation must be done in Spanish.

Please note that this course is delivered in Spanish and class discussions will be carried out in this language.
This course provides a broad overview of Spanish American literature and its development from the colonial period to the 21st century. Through the study of works by authors from Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and El Salvador we will explore issues relating to identity (gender, political and national), ideology and violence.
In 2017-18, the course will focus on the following areas: ‘Mujer y escritura en la época colonial’ (Juana Inés de la Cruz), ‘Violencia y novela en los siglos XX y XXI (Mariano Azuela, Los de abajo; Fernando Vallejo, La virgen de los sicarios; Laura Restrepo, Demasiados héroes) and ‘Poesía y política’ (selections from works by Pablo Neruda, Juan Gelman, Roque Dalton and Pedro Shimose)
