Student Volunteering Week 2016

Student Volunteering Week 2017: Participate | Collaborate | Celebrate. This national initiative hosted by UK universities and colleges aims to showcase student social action within the local community and wider society. Royal Holloway's Community Action is inviting students to compete in the 'Volunteer Challenge' by getting involved with a whole variety of scheduled activities during the week to inspire more students to make a positive impact in their community.

Royal Holloway Community Action has a number of activities planned throughout the week (20th-26th February) including a range of give it a go taster opportunities. There is something to do every day for 7 days, so scroll down to take a look and join the Facebook event page for further updates. SImply get involved by arriving at meeting point in time to join the project (some such as charity shops, supermarket based activities, you head direct to the location stated and find the manager or acitivity leader). Then once you've got started record all your volunteering via the online form towards becoming the first ever 'Student Volunteering Week Champion'.

Monday 20th February

British Heart Foundation Shop: daytime, Unit 2 White House, 53-55 High Street, Egham, TW20 9EX - helping out at a charity shop with various tasks.

Community Garden: 1-3pm, meet at Students' Union - supporting local school children with gardening activities. Find out more at the Facebook group.

Tuesday 21st February

Food4Lunch: 10am-4pm, Tesco Egham - inviting shoppers to donate items from a suggested shopping list to help make up over 100 lunch bags for disadvantaged children during school holidays. Find out more at the Facebook group.

Shaw Trust Shop: daytime, 54 High Street, Egham, TW20 9EX - helping out at a charity shop with various tasks.

Citizens Project: 2-4pm, info stand at Students' Union - find out first about the exciting new roles open to students to support this Heritage Lottery Funded community initiative.

Wednesday 22nd February

The Children's Trust Shop 'University Charity Shop Challenge': 12noon-5pm, Chertsey - students will represent their university or college on a national level by taking part in the first University Charity Shop Challenge for The Children’s Trust. Teams will compete by volunteering in their local Children’s Trust shop, and the team who manages to collect the most donations, tag and price the most items and ultimately increase the shop’s profits will be crowned the winner. 

Egham Floods Anthology: 12noon-4pm, Tesco Egham - talking to shoppers inviting them to share memories of the 2014 floods at the sharing memories event on Saturday 25th Februrary at Egham Museum. To get involved email with your available time.

Nature Conservation: 1-4pm, meet at Founders tennis courts bus stop - working with the National Trust at Runnymede Forest to continue the progress made with forest management and conservation techniques. Find out more at the Facebook group.

Love Your Campus: 1-3pm, meet at Students' Union or join at Queen's building quad garden - gardening activity at the Queens Quad garden to involve pruning shrubs, weeding and a general tidy up of the garden. Find out more at the Facebook group.

International Kitchen: 12.45pm-3.15pm, meet at Founder's North Clock Tower - represent your nationality to local school children through a session involving cooking a dish and sharing your culture. Find out more and sign up at the Facebook group.

Thames21 river clean-up: 1.15pm-4pm, meet at Students' Union - improving riverside by Staines site involving tasks such as removing litter, trimming back vegetation and perhaps testing water quality. This time we will also get to meet Luke Damerum from Thames21 who will be co-leading the event and able to share the role of how the charity in improving the health of waterways. Thursday 23rd February

British Heart Foundation Shop: daytime, Unit 2 White House, 53-55 High Street, Egham, TW20 9EX - helping out at a charity shop with various tasks.

Egham Floods Anthology: 6pm, Founder's Library room 204 (meet outside library at 5.50pm) - attend a Writing Workshop to join the writing team on this community project which aims to create a printed and online publication documenting the floods of 2014 in the local community. Email to book as there is a task to complete in advance.

International Kitchen: 2.45pm-5pm, meet at Founder's North Clock Tower - represent your nationality to the local community through a session involving cooking a dish and sharing your culture. Find out more and sign up at the Facebook group.

Friday 24th February

Charity Bookstall, 9.30am-12.30am, United Church of Egham, Egham High Street - book/LP sorting session to prepare for upcoming bookstall at weekend. All are welcome but particularly if you have some music knowledge…there are over 300 LPs to be sorted through!

Donate & Reuse: 2.30pm, meet at the Boilerhouse - join in to draw the project's "Reverse pop-up shop" in partnership with Art, and Sustainability societies. Find out more at the Facebook group.

Love Your Community: meet at the Students' Union - Join others who are keen to keep the local community looking it’s best by arranging regular litter picks and gardening tasks. Find out more at the Facebook group.

Silver Surfers: 3.30-5pm, meet in the Windsor Building - join this project to assist and encourage the over 50’s generation with the use of computers to stay connected to their support groups, discover a new hobby, or just to make practical improvements to their daily lives. Saturday 25th February

Sunday 26th February
