The Doctoral School was delighted to be able to fund two of our research students, Romy Martinez (PhD Music) and Eze Olumba (PhD PIR/Philosophy) to attend the Life Beyond the PhD conference held at Cumberland Lodge, Windsor in August. This annual conference offers PhD students and early career researchers the opportunity to share their experiences with each other and to take part in invaluable training in communication, public engagement, and drafting interdisciplinary research proposals, while also being encouraged to think about the impact of their research within the wider context of society.
Both researchers have come back enthused by the experience. Thanks to Romy and Eze for their inspiring reports on the conference:
- Eze: 'My time at the Lodge was splendid, as I mentioned to Chris Woods during a video interview. Beyond enhancing our communication, collaboration, and negotiation skills and providing valuable career development insights, I had fantastic opportunities to network and engage with others on unfamiliar topics, learning from their experiences.' - Romy: 'I am very grateful to Royal Holloway University of London for funding this opportunity that made me reflect on my PhD journey and celebrate the joy of coming this far, all the way from Paraguay to the UK!'' Read Romy's report in full
The Life Beyond the PhD conference is held annually and we hope to continue providing some funded spaces to our postgraduate researchers, especially those approaching the end of their PhD journey, in future years. Applications are normally open end of June / July.
