On Friday 2 September, UKRI (UK Research and Innovation) announced a 10% increase to the minimum student stipend level previously announced for the 2022 to 2023 academic year:

Royal Holloway has made a commitment to track the stipend for College-funded students against the UKRI stipend.  The stipend for College funded students will therefore rise in line with this increase for 2022/23.

What does this mean for me?

  • If you are UKRI funded or College funded: your studentship stipend for 2022/23 will increase to £19,668 (i.e. new minimum UKRI stipend of £17,668 + £2,000 London Weighting).
  • If you are College funded but receive a non-standard stipend amount rather than the full UKRI stipend: your stipend will increase by the same percentage as the UKRI stipend rate has increased between 2021/22 and 2022/23.
  • If your stipend is co-funded by the College and an external organisation, other than UKRI, at the UKRI rate: the College will ask the external organisation to increase their contribution but will underwrite the increase in stipend for one year as a gesture of goodwilll so your stipend for 2022/23 will also increase to £19,668.
  • If your stipend is 100% paid from a grant, the increase in stipend will need to be found from the grant so whether you receive it will depend if there are enough funds in the grant / whether the grant funder is able to make the additional contribution.

This increase should be distributed across the standard four payments for your 2022/23 billing year. Please note that if you are College funded and have a non-standard start date, your 2022/23 billing year will start on your anniversary i.e. if you started in January, your 2022/23 blling year will start in January 2023.
