Towards Justice: Law Enforcement & Reconciliation Police Conference with Cumberland Lodge - Bursary places available for doctoral students

This conference is taking place virtually on 17-18 June 2021.

This year’s conference examines criminal justice approaches to addressing historical wrongs in society. It explores the role of the police in promoting successful and enduring reconciliation and the pursuit of wider social justice.

This conference will be held under the Chatham House Rule in order to enable frank and productive conversations. Participants will have the opportunity to hear from high-profile guest speakers and take part in interactive breakout rooms and Q&A opportunities.

Guest speakers include: Margaret Aspinal - Chair, the Hillsborough Families Support Group; Sir Robert Francis QC - Barrister, Serjeants' Inn Chambers; Sir George Hamilton QPM - Former Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI); and Susan Hemming - Director of Legal Services, Crown Prosecution Services (CPS).

Our conference steering committee is chaired by Chief Constable Olivia Pinkney QPM.

We will be presenting the key themes of discussion and cross-sector recommendations from this conference in a Cumberland Lodge Report on ‘Towards Justice: Law Enforcement & Reconciliation’, written by our freelance Research Associate, Professor Martina Feilzer.

In case you are unfamiliar with Cumberland Lodge, the charity was founded in 1947, in the aftermath of World War II. We empower people, through dialogue and debate, to tackle the causes and effects of social division. We do this by convening multi-sector, interdisciplinary conferences, panel debates and retreats that engage people of all ages, backgrounds and perspectives in candid conversations on societal and ethical issues that affect us all. We actively involve young people in all aspects of our work, to nurture their potential as future leaders and change-makers.

We are pleased to be able to offer a limited number of bursary places for doctoral students working in relevant fields to attend this conference free of charge.

To find out more and to download the bursary application form (available at the bottom of the webpage), please visit our website here. The deadline for applications is Friday 9 April 2021.
