Finalised thesis submission

Once your examiners have confirmed that your thesis meets the requirements to be awarded the PhD or MPhil, you will be asked to submit your finalised thesis to the online repository, Pure.

Your award will not be processed until the finalised thesis has been submitted and your award has been approved.

Award process

How do I submit my thesis on Pure?

Please visit the Pure pages for guidance on how to submit your thesis.

Is your thesis title the same as on your entry form?

Please note that if your thesis title has changed since you submitted your exam entry form, your supervisor may be contacted for written approval of this change.

It is important that the University has your thesis title recorded accurately as it will appear on your award letter and will be read out at your Graduation ceremony.

"I'm having issues uploading my thesis - what do I do?"

We are aware that some students are experiencing issues uploading their final thesis to Pure, usually because their campus access has expired.

If you are having issues, please email a copy of your thesis to OpenAccess (Copying in Doctoral School) providing any necessary embargo information. They will then be able to upload your thesis manually on your behalf.

Embargoes

It is your responsibility to apply any required embargoes on your thesis when you upload this onto Pure.

Two year embargo

If you would like a two year embargo, please apply this when uploading your thesis. No justification is required for this.

Two to five year embargo

If you would like an embargo on your thesis between two and five years in length, this should have been indicated and approved by your supervisor on the exam entry form. A request explaining the reasons for this should have been submitted using this form alongside the entry form. If you decide that you would like an embargo after submitting your exam entry form, please email Doctoral School.

Embargo over five years

If you would like an embargo over five years, this should have been requested at the exam entry stage with an explanation of reason why (for further information visit the PhD/MPhil exam entry pages). The request will have been sent to the Director of Postgraduate Education for approval. If you have been informed that the request has been approved, please apply the embargo when you upload your thesis.

No electronic copy

If you have been granted permission not to submit an electronic copy of your finalised thesis at the exam entry stage, please submit one hard-bound copy to the Doctoral School. The thesis must be cloth-bound in medium blue cloth with the degree, year and surname and initials in gold lettering up the spine.

Embargo checks

Research Degrees check the embargoes applied to finalised theses uploaded to Pure on a monthly basis and will contact you to clarify any discrepencies in their records.
