What is carbon literacy training?

Join Professor Sigrun Wagner, Professor Liz Schafer and Dr David Bullen for this four-part Carbon Literacy Training course for both students and staff at Royal Holloway.

It all began with the BBC …

In 2015, the BBC invested in Carbon Literacy Training (CLT) for their staff, aware of the need to give their employees the skills and motivation for them to thrive, professionally and personally, in a low-carbon economy. Now, across the arts sector and beyond, carbon literacy is becoming increasingly recognised as necessary, particularly in the context of the green recovery from the pandemic. Companies and organisations across the world are learning to address their carbon emissions, as climate change and its consequences underline the need for a carbon literate workforce.

Our CLT certificate course is based on the successful course developed by Nottingham Trent University’s Green Academy. The course is open to and suitable for all students and staff, regardless of discipline, experience, or background.

Course length and accreditation

In order to gain a certificate, all participants need to attend all four of the two hour sessions and demonstrate their carbon literacy at the end of the course with a short written submission.

The CLT team at Royal Holloway won a teaching commendation for this programme in 2022.
