Understanding my fees

Tuition Fee help and guidance

Guidance on the Tuition Fees you will be charged and how they are calculated while studying at Royal Holloway. For more detailed information, please refer to your Offer Letter and the Tuition Fee Operational Guidelines below.

How is my alumni discount applied?

As a Royal Holloway alumni continuing with Post Graduate studies you will automatically receive a discount on the first year of your tuition fees (terms and conditions apply):

  • 15% discount on tuition fees for the first year of post graduate study; or,
  • If you have graduated from another University of London institution you will receive a 10% discount on tuition fees

When we calculate your discount, we allow for the fact that the alumni dscount:

  • is taken as a percentage of the fee, following any other reductions, such as scholarships.
  • is available for the first year of study only, whether full or part time.
  • cannot be used in conjunction with full fee waiver scholarship (including those with an additional cash award).
  • cannot be applied to CPD courses.

If you are fully enrolled and believe that you should have received an alumni discount, or that the discount you can see on Campus Connect is incorrect, please contact Student Services and we will be able to help you.

Will I receive an EU tuition fee reduction scholarship?

Since 2021/22 EU students have been classified as International Students for fee purposes. The year that you start at Royal Holloway University will determine the discount available to you:

  • For students starting programmes in 2021/22 a fee reduction scholarship was offered equivalent to the difference between the UK and International fee for the full duration of their course.
  • For students starting programmes in 2022/23 a fee reduction scholarship was offered that is equivalent to a 60% reduction in the difference between the UK and International fee for the full duration of their course.
  • For students starting programmes in 2023/24 a fee reduction scholarship was offered that is equivalent to a 30% reduction in the difference between the UK and International fee for the full duration of their course.

To receive the fee reduction scholarship, you must:

  • Be classified as 'overseas' for fees purposes.
  • Be an EU national on 1 September before the start of the course.

If you receive an EU fee reduction scholarship, you can also be eligible to hold a second Royal Holloway scholarship.

Student’s that start their course with us after September such as EU Postgraduate Research students and EU Visiting Students and also meet the above criteria will be eligible for the EU Tuition Fee Reduction Scholarship.

Your Scholarship should be automatically applied to your fees, however, if you believe that you haven't received the correct EU Scholarship discount, please contact Student Services and we will be able to help you.

How will my CPD fees be calculated each year?

CPD students are charged for the credits they are taking in an academic year. The cost of the credits will be pro-rated according to the full-time fee applicable for that course in that academic year and rounded up to the nearest £5.

Example: A Home student on an MSc Information Security is taking 3 modules. Each module is 20 credits so the billing is worked out as:

60 / 180 (full credit load) x £12,600 (full-time fee) = £4,200

This will mean that the overall cost of studying the course via CPD mode is higher than studying it full-time in one year, as an inflationary increase of up to 5% will be applied to each subsequent year of study.

Example: A student taking the MSc Information Security full-time in 2021/22 would be charged £11,900. If the same student takes 3 years to study the MSc Information Security doing 60 credits every year, the cost would be as follows:

2021/22 cost: 60 / 180 x 11,900 = £3,970 (rounded up)

2022/23 cost: 60 / 180 x 12,200 = £4,070 (rounded up)

2023/24 cost 60 / 180 x 12,600 = £4,200 (rounded up)

Total cost over 3 years = £12,240

Students who change mode from full-time/part-time to CPD will have their fees adjusted so they are charged for the credits they are taking per academic year. Any payments already received by the University above the adjusted fee will be held as credit on the students’ account.

If you have an enquiry relating to your CPD fees, please contact Student Services and we will be able to help you.

How much will it cost to Repeat attendance?

If you have been advised to repeat attendance for previously taken modules, you will be charged according to the number of modular credits you are repeating in that year. This is calculated on a pro rata basis, using the following calculation:

Number of credits taken     x    applicable Full-time Fee for that Academic Year

 Full credit load

(120 UG or 180 PG)

If you take any additional new units on an extracurricular or option basis during your repeat year, you will also be charged on a pro-rata credit basis for these units.

If you believe that you haven't been charged the correct repeat fees, please contact Student Services and we will be able to help you.

If you would like to understand the implication of repeating a year on your Student Finance, please refer to government guidance on your entitlement to funding when repeating a year.

How much will I be charged to Resit modules?

From 2023/24 there will be no fees for resitting assessments without attendance. Repeating modules with attendance still incurs a fee.

Please note that if you are only resitting exams, you will not be entitled to any Student Finance funding as you will not be in attendance.

*Non-compulsory exchange refers to students opting to take an entire year abroad that isn’t an additional year to their degree programme, i.e. it replaces a year spent at Royal Holloway. For this reason, 100% tuition fee is charged.

UK students whose year abroad consists of two elements that are charged at different rates (e.g. Turing study plus non Turing work) are charged the lower of the two rates.

UK students who pay £9,250 tuition fees and have a Turing scheme year/Study Abroad sandwich year will have their fee capped at £1,385 (slightly less than 15%). For years in industry the capped fee for this group will be up to £1,850 (20%).

I'm an incoming Study Abroad / Exchange student - what will I be charged?

Turing Students for 23/24

Although your fees will appear in Campus Connect you will be covered under the Turing scheme and are not liable for any fees.

International Exchange Students

Your fees will appear on Campus Connect, however,  there is often a partnership agreement with the home institution, so you may not be charged directly. If you are liable for any fees, this will be shown on your Offer letter.

Study Abroad Students

Withdrawing from the University - understanding my fees

If you withdraw from your studies you are liable to pay fees for the period that you have been registered before withdrawal. Your fee liability is assessed on the date of withdrawal and your fee status.

Once you have decided that you definitely want to withdraw from your programme of study at Royal Holloway, you must contact your School to arrange an appointment with your Personal Advisor, Academic Co-ordinator or Head of Department to discuss the details of your withdrawal.

If you are an undergraduate student with a ‘Home’ UK/EU fee status and are eligible for funding via Student Finance, you need to completed this form. You must also notify Student Finance as soon as you withdraw, in order that you can stop your student finance payment; this will reduce any repayments that you need to make. Find out further information.

Interrupting my studies - understanding my fees

If you need to interrupt your studies, you are liable to pay fees for the period that you have been registered before interrupting. Your fee liability is assessed on the date that you interrupt and your fee status.

For students who are not funded by the SLC, when you interrupt your studies, an appropriate credit will be applied to your account in the years that you interrupt and return if required so that you only pay for the time that you are registered to study.

Please note that when you interrupt, any monies paid will be held on the account until you return or withdraw from your studies.

If you receive Student Finance and interrupt during an academic year, we will notify them of your change in circumstance and fee liability. You will need to reapply for funding if you return to your studies in a new academic year. Your funding will restart automatically if you return in the same academic year. Find out more about Student Finance entitlements when suspending studies.

Please click here for forms and guidance on changing your study details. Please note that there are different forms depending on whether or not you are funded by the SLC.

If you decide to withdraw after a period of interruption and:

  • are self-funded, you will need to contact Student Fees to request a refund if there is a remaining balance.
  • are funded by the SLC, we will contact them and update your record with them to reflect the actual balance owed.

For further detail on liability dates for this academic year, please refer to the Tuition Fee Operational Guidelines.
